Went to the pre-election gun show and walked out with a classic

The gun show was packed today, as expected. I didn't walk out with a black gun like other folks, but I walked out with a classic that I've been hunting down for a while: An older Remington 870 12 gauge with rifle sights and wood. Lo and behold, I found one for $250. Made in 1999 (pre Freedom Group), 20" improved cylinder bore barrel with rifle sights, and wood furniture. The only mods it will get is a +3 mag extension and maybe sling swivels.

The pen is mightier than the sword, but only when you're shoving it through your enemy's throat.

I have a similar set up but did as RCI said and bought a barrel. The great thing about the 870 is for about $100 you can buy another barrel and you have a new shotgun for upland bird, or for waterfowl, or for turkey. It is pretty much the best all around gun out there. And you can change the barrel in about 2 minutes. I am very happy with mine. I think you got a real good deal.

I tried to push the envelope, but found that it was stationery.

Thanks, fellas. I haven't had the chance to break it down yet, but from what I can tell, it has seen little use. I appears that it was stored and forgotten, as it was coated in a layer of dust and the receiver has multiple light surface rust spots from not being wiped down occasionally. The only bad thing is it's the low-end Express model, but it was manufactured well before the Freedom Group took over, so it should be good to go. My last 870 was a well-used long-barreled 20 gauge that I sold a decade ago, and I used to have a Norinco 98 (870 clone) that I sold last year. It's good to have another one in the collection.

Great deal on a great gun. My dad still has his Wingmaster from the late 1950's, talk about a smooth action. After 50+ years of hunting and trap/skeet it shucks shells like magic. I've had my own Wingmaster for 20+ years and while it will never have the round count or time afield that my father's does it's still my favorite shotgun by far.

After a quick cleaning and a a coat of oil, this thing is smooth. Judging by the internals, it would surprise me if this shotgun fired more than ten rounds in its lifetime. Other than a few small spots of surface rust, everything looks new inside.

I have one similar in 20 gauge. I hope to hunt with it one year. My problem is that I have too many choices. Nice find though!

I installed a Remington +3 magazine extension today. I love the look of a 20" barreled shotgun with a magazine that runs the same length. I will put a leather sling on the 870 and proceed to shoot the crap out of it. Here it is next to a 20" Mossberg 500:

Is the 870 barrel, with the rifle sights, a smooth bore or a rifled barrel?

    Both guns are beautiful.

    Nice score!
It's particular gratifying when you stumble on that kind of a gem at a great price ... Congrats!
