I'm amazed at the prices of AK's these days. They are costing more than AR's now. Weird.

Sure is weird. I think we can blame this fact on parts kits drying up and ARs being 1000 times more plentiful than in years past.

Yep. The AK kits drying up and imports being cut off can be blamed on the government, but the fact that ARs are being made everywhere and that the price is falling because of economy of scale and improved manufacturing technology is something to be celebrated.

It was a toss-up among this Mini, a Vulcan Yugo RPK for $1200 and a Springfield Armory FAL from the 80s for $950. The FAL was really tempting because I know those old Springfield-imported FALs are good to go and sell for much more, but I hardly shoot .308 as it is any way. I've got a bunch of 5.56/223, so I went with the cheaper Mini-14.
I'm holding out for a classic FN FAL. The only thing I don't have is a good .308 battle rifle.

Get an AR10 type. FAL rifles (I've built a dozen, still have 1) are not that accurate. I also own an M1A and do like it, but it is old school and they are more accurate than the FAL but not by much. The AR10 systems are going to be much more accurate and improved handling / mag change over the old Rock In style mags that the M1A and FAL use. One last thing, the AR10 with the flat topped pic railed upper receivers are a much easier system to put optics on. A .308 is not a close range caliber, IMO such weapons deserve scoping to take advantage of the 1000 yard capability of them.

Great advice for picking out a shooter, though I must admit I would still enjoy collecting the (second half of the) 20'th century battle rifles: G3, FAL, M1A.

Damn, I bought mine a long time ago and it was around $250. I didn't realize they'd gone up that much. Wow.

I shot the Mini the other day since it was 60 degrees out. As expected, it wasn't AR accurate but it ran 100%. The thing sure shoots out some fireballs (Federal .223) and the casings get launched about 20 feet away. One of the casings pegged a dude underneath his left eye and he wasn't wearing eye protection. That probably taught him a valuable lesson.

Did you hit the target? If so it is accurate enough.

Well, he did hit a bystander under the left eye with an ejected casing....does that count?
