    Gun show find. Savage 99E in .308 Win.

    Gun show today at the Northfield fire hall. Place was very crowded. I forgot my camera so didnt get any pictures. But there was a ton of bubba lee enfields, some double barrel shotguns, average used stuff but for some reason there was 6 Savage 99 rifles there. I don't usually see them around. I been wanting one for a while but never actively searched for one. Anyway this one had what the seller thought was a rusty barrel. It looked pretty bad but still had rifling so I paid him the $200 he was asking and figured i would clean the rust out and use it for a range toy. to shoot at garbage... I got home and pushed a .270 bore brush down the barrel DRY to start the removal of the rust. This is a .308 win rifle. I didnt want to jam a 30 cal brush in there so i started a bit smaller. Anyway it was cigarette smoke caked dust bunnies not rust at all. A big ol tangle of grossness came out on the brush and the bore is pristine like a new rifle. I feel like its christmas morning. Some pics.

    There was scope rings on it but i took them off. I am going to shoot iron sights with this one. I put some plugs in the tapped holes so they don't get damaged.

    I know a guy that I hunt with that has one of these, I'd love to get my hands on one of them in the future. Congrats on such a great find and deal.

    Took it out and gave it a run. Functions perfectly and is on the mark. It worked out well.

    Congratulations on the awesome find. Extra bonus that it's chambered for a common caliber. Sounds like it wasn't used much if the bore was so dusty that it looked like rust. I have one in .300 Savage that used to belong to my grandfather. I have never shot it, but I love finger-banging it. Just a solid and well-made firearm.

    Then it's a cheap imitation, not the real thing. Since I feel sorry for you for that guy taking you to the cleaners, I'll take it off your hands for $125.

    You have a newer (in relative terms) model, so you will have to look at the receiver where the action lever is attached for the date code and compare it to those listed on that website. The serial number database is for years 1950 and older. Here's a good post that should help you:

    Link to quote:

    In 1949, Savage began stamping a tiny, lightly impressed oval on the lower, front side of the "lever boss".

    The “lever boss” is the extension of the lower part of the receiver into which the lever fits and rotates. Inside the oval, Savage stamped the letter "A" together with other numbers which are apparently inspector’s numbers.

    On many Model 99 rifles, this “oval” is indistinct or difficult to read as are the letters and numbers inside the oval. On my own late model “EG”, serial #709XXX, made in 1953, only the upper case letter “E” and the rear half of the oval’s circumference (which looks like a large, faint, backwards letter "C") barely show on the lever boss. The front half of the oval’s circumference and whatever is inside the oval in front of the letter “E” are indistinguishable.

    The letters “O” and “Q” were skipped and not used due to their similar appearance.

    Here is a complete list of the Lever Boss Codes and their corresponding year of manufacture:
    A= 1949
    B= 1950
    C= 1951
    D= 1952
    E= 1953
    F= 1954
    G= 1955
    H= 1956
    I= 1957
    J= 1958
    K= 1959
    L= 1960
    M= 1961
    N= 1962
    O= SKIPPED
    P=1963
    Q= SKIPPED
    R= 1964
    S= 1965
    T= 1966
    U= 1967
    V= 1968
    W= 1969
    X= 1970
