Kits really started to suck ass when then president Clinton started calling for the total enforcement of the 89 import ban ... when barrels were blocked from importation ... It wasn't too bad until inventories started running dry and the US barrels and other parts doubled the cost of the kits for the individual re-building AK's/surplus arms.
