Apparently that was the story he gave to the cops initially, said he was attacked by protesters so he was merely trying to flee out of harms way, and the protesters were "in the way" so he had no choice but to ram through them.
But there were at least a couple witnesses at the scene who said they saw him idling his car a few blocks up, and thought it odd because there was a green light and he wasn't moving. Then all of a sudden they heard screeching of the tires and saw him gunning it for the crowd.
Apparently the cops didn't buy his story either, or he wouldn't have been arrested and charged with murder. (His political activities earlier in the day only add motive...)

A common police tactic when dealing with unwanted demonstrations is to stand by and allow violence to occur, then claim it is an "unlawful assembly" (due to the violence) even though they had permits to be there, then proceeding to beat back the crowds and arrest people for "failure to disperse."
Been there, done that. Got the battle scars to prove it.
Too old for that shit any more... leave it to the young bucks to "fight the man" if they want and scuffle with the police.
