    6.5 or 6.8?

I was at the range last week and there was a guy shooting a 6.5 or 6.8 ... it was an AR and he said it used the same mags & bolt and he was shooting 6.5 projectiles.

    What was he shooting?

I did the 300blackout because I wanted something with more "thump" but didn't want to have to different bolts & mags

6.8 uses a different bolt and mags

    UNLESS he was using 6.45X45

Probably 6.5 Grendel. One of my guys at work had the .300 Blackout but dropped it for the 6.5. He's very happy with it.

Maybe not.. I misread your post about the same bolt and mags.

This is interesting. My father is a huge fan of 6.5 calibers. He would love to see a 6.5 AR... It would probably trigger him to buy one.

I have a 6.5 Arisaka carbine. Can't hit the broadside of a barn with it.

Ditto, and that's why I'm asking ... If there's a 6.5 that uses a cutdown .223 case like the 300BO and if it's something I can do with just a barrel change, I'm IN, all day long!

mrkalashnikov ... That's surprising as the 6.5 seems to be an inherently accurate round ... is the barrel shot-out or something?

I would think the 6.5 Grendel as well. On paper it is quite a capable round. It is the only round I have seriously considered adding to my collection in the last 12 years.

The barrel is a sewer pipe but still has quite a bit of rifling left. My dad picked it up on Guadalcanal...don't know what shape it was in then. My uncle stored it for almost 20 years in his unheated barn in MA. Then I got it when I was still a kid & used to stick 1 1/2 firecrackers in the muzzle & light them off.

It has only a 16" barrel or so...I think it might have been fairly inaccurate from the get-go due to that. I should put it in my rifle rest some day to actually test it.

Thanks for the direction but it seem's to have faded out of popularity, there isn't anything listed on gunbroker ... A bit of info on a few forms but nothing really recent, but reading them I realized I'd spend several hundred bucks on a barrel & setting up to reload shoot a few rounds then it would just sit in the safe because it's not that much more fun or better than shooting 223/556 ... There just isn't enough case capacity to be that much "better" which is probably why it hasn't taken off

It wasn't about the FPS, it was a bigger thump and something different to test and develope a load for ... but the itch wore off a bit, but more than that, after reading a few posts I started feeling that the thump wasn't worth the time and expense ... Plus, for more AR thump I've got a couple 300BO uppers and for even more thump a 7.62x39!

A true testament to its popularity ... still, I think I would have liked to have one if all I had to do was cut down 223 brass & buy a set of dies. I've already got projectiles for my Creedmore ... what's one more upper hanging on the wall anyway!
