Ford to suspend production at 5 North American plants

Ford Motor said Tuesday it plans to idle five North American vehicle assembly plants for a total of 10 weeks to reduce inventories of slow-selling models.

The plants affected include three assembly plants in the United States and two in Mexico, the company said in a statement. The vehicle models include the Ford Fusion and Lincoln MKZ midsize sedans, the Ford Focus compact car, the Lincoln Continental and Ford Mustang, Ford Fiesta and the Ford Transit van.

10 weeks will stretch into 15, then 20.

They did something similar last year so I don't see suspending production for a couple of weeks at five out of 35 assembly plants as a big deal but some folks gotta find something to complain about.

Also it's not a 10 week shutdown. Some plants are only suspending production for 2-3 weeks.

Most auto makers also shut down between Xmas and New Years. Just wanted to get thought out there to avoid any panic.

Last new vehicles we bought were a 2001 F150 supercrew when they first came out, and a 2000 Dodge Ram2500w/plow. Still have both, wife drives the F150 about 180,000 miles on it now, The Dodge has about 40K on it, fing POS. Used principally for plowing the driveway. 3 Power steering pumps, the shafts keep breaking, Doors started rusting before 3K(typical dodge truck) O2 sensors need to be replaced AGAIN. I've bought about 3 or 4 cheap used cars since we bought the trucks I used for commuting. Just junked a 95 Mercury Mystique I bought used for $1800 with 101,000 miles on it, now has 240,000 Bought a 98Ford Contour fixed after a deer hit for $1200 with less than 100K on it. Nice car, perfect interior and exterior, literally was driven by that little old lady. I wouldn't mind a new car, but I'm so over car payments. Wife wants one more F150 supercrew when she retires. Our house is paid off year or two already. Small Credit card debt. Being basically debt free is where it's at for me. Money to invest, money to buy what you want with cash.

Eh. We have a 16 jeep wrangler and 17 explorer. Done with new buying. Need to get over my fear of used cars. At my school we have a great auto tech program, and I have had a used tranny put in a vehicle before. Will eventually buy a used 3rd.....

Those were actually GMC models not Cheverolet. I grew up a Chevy guy but now tend to drive what I can afford and what I feel represents a good value. Over the years that has included Ford, Chevy, Olds, Nissan, Isuzu and Acura. Most all bought as used and or demo models.

If I were going to pick an iconic Chevy it would be a 57 Belair (first car I recall my parents having) or the 69 Chevelle SS 396. Those were nice Chevys!

Say what you will about Chevy's, but those Cavaliers are little tanks.

Bought my '98 Chevy Cav used back in 2011 for a princely sum of $2200, had less than 100K miles on it, still runs great 6 years later with nearly 45K additional miles put on it.

Literally the only thing I've had to replace (besides the tires) was the water-pump going out twice. But both those times were due to user-error, pushing the engine too hard going up over mountains.

Not the most powerful beast in the world, but for general commuting it works just fine. (25-mpg city and 30-mpg highway too, which isn't too bad for a non-hybrid/modern vehicle.)

I worked in that plant (3,4,5) the only difference is the GMC nameplate = Give More Cash. When they came down the line they were given extra attention by the Management.

They did have better brakes, wheels and such but it was the same frame.

It's been slow at my shop since july. We do injection molding for most of the car companies. They've had voluntary lay offs or vacation time. We do have a lot of work lined up its just the machines for the jobs aren't delivered and set up yet. I took a week off back in July when my daughter was visiting, but have stayed busy at work since. They just have us do odds and ends like cleaning or painting. From what I understand July, aug, and Sept are slow. And winter is said to be slow for Christmas and such. But I'm high enough now in seniority that I don't worry as much about being laid off, but still worry enough to put extra cash away for a rainy day.
