Next Up: Gun Kote AR15 Carbine

Going in the oven about Noon PST. I'm trying to rig up a hangar like Swampy Suggested.

Hey Swampy, I think I fixed my oven size problem:

With the buffer tube still attached it is much longer than a savage action with a 24" barrel.

I also wrapped some foil thickly around the flash hider so as not to overheat the barrel.

    LOL....Pretty funny.
My AK is hanging in the oven right this very minute as we speak.
I took the bottom oven rack out completely.
Moved the 2nd rack to the upper-most slot in the oven.
Then suspended the rifle under it/from it.

Longer guns are a PITA aren't they?
    Good luck.
You seem to be on a mission these last few days.
    Looking forward to more pics.

    Now with more desert goodness.

That's pretty much it. My SAR 3 is more of a trunk gun so re-finishing would be kind of a waste since I won't be suiting-up to use it. My A2 is done up but too ugly to be worth posting (still my go-to though).

I need to get some tan webbing to make slings next...

If I may ask... Why didn't you paint the barrel, gas-block, charging handle, flash-hider, and sights as well? You could always hit them with some matte-tan krylon if you want it to be able to be removed easier.

    BTW, looks good.

I could do the rear sight.

Krylon will burn off of a hot barrel/gas block. The front sight gets pretty hot too.

The Gun Kote bakes at 300 F- anything more than 350 F and it will begin to burn too. The Gun Kote is also an insulator so it it will exacerbate the problem. On a M4-profile barrel it's a toss-up. I went with the conservative option.

I dunno dude... I've had my SAR2 Krylon painted for years now, have done numerous mag dumps and got it plenty hot. The paint is still on there.

I can't see an AR's gas block getting much hotter than an AK74's.

    Exclamation

Why the heck didn't you remove the barrel? It's not like the tool is $50 bucks to do it with.

The barrel thing was in the Army guide I read- I guess it wouldn't be the first time they were wrong.

They do paint their sight towers- but those are steel. My gas block/sight are aluminum so that worried me.

[quote=Schuetzenman] Didn't really need to. I would like to get that plus an action block, vise and those little pliers to get the HG ring off- I can barely stand to pay for ammo these days though.

I'll think about the barrel and see if there are any painted aluminum gas blocks/sights out there.
