The northern hornet yellow jackets have the attitude and a sting as bad as the red wasps of the south. The hornet sting feels more like an electric shock though. The red wasp is just damn near as painful as a scorpion...

Hornets, same shape as a wasp, just smaller and usually black and yellow striped. Wasps are usually red or black and bigger than hornets. I always thought yellow jackets were specifically the hornets that build their nests underground but I could be wrong.

The "Hornets" we know in the south that build the circular nests in trees, etc. are called "Bold Face Hornets" but are actually Yellow Jackets that build aerial nests...

The true "Hornet" here is the south is the "European Hornet" and hurt like a bitch when you get stung, more painful than any other wasp, bee, etc due to their venom having a large amount of acetylcholine. They also eat meat, ie spiders, flies, wasps, bees, etc.

There is a species of hornet in China/Japan that have killed people their venom is so potent.
