Need referral to Gunsmith-scope mount SLR-95
I have owned a Bulgarian Arsenal SLR-95 for several years now and love it very much. BUT...
It did not come with the scope mount side plate. I am getting tired of shooting it with the iron sights and would eventually like to purchase an optic for it. Maybe a POSP, but that's another topic.
KVAR sells the side mount plate for this type of AK but I cannot find a gunsmith in my area (Long Island, NY) that will install it for me. I was hoping someone here could recommend an experienced AK gunsmith that I could send the rifle to.
Welcome to the group !!!
I will post this in both threads, but you will not like what I am going to say.
The SLR-95 is a fairly rare and highly sought after model. If you drill the receiver to install a side mount for a scope you will destroy the value of the rifle.
That said, it is your rifle and if you do want to install the mount, just remember what I said above if you ever decide to sell it.
Check around for a scope mount that would replace the upper hand guard and gas tube. That way you can keep the original and not have to modify the rifle itself. Another option is a receiver cover mount, but most of those have thumb screws at the rear to secure them, which could do cosmetic damage to the receiver.
That out of the way, where on the Island are you??? I was born in Brooklyn but spent a lot of time in both Hempstead and Old Bethpage. Used to live next to that golf course there and as a kid snuck onto it many times to have fun.
Screw drilling that rifle. That's making things more difficult than they need to be. You have one very easy and dependable option that i would recommend for putting a scope or other optic over the receiver that requires no modification(and thus no gunsmith needed) to the rifle.
Texas Weapon Systems Dog Leg Scope Rail Gen-2
(NO thumb screws BTW )
Since it's an SLR-95 you can't use a Krebs rail due to it being a milled reciever so don't consider it if you go searching. It's not designed to work on it. There are others but i like the TWS one. I'm using a TWS rail on my Norinco right now. It's worth every penny.

I have had this on my radar before. I actually spoke with the guy who makes them some time ago. Not really sure why I havent pulled the trigger on one but you are probably right in that it is the easiest way to run optics on the AK.
The SLR-95 was offered at one time with an optional side mount. I know 'cause it shows it in the manual. Drilling it wouldn't be a big deal as long as someone who knows what they are doing does the work.
As for the collectibility, I dont really care. The rifle was given to me by my Dad and I plan on keeping it for the duration.
