    The Boats were HOW Big???

...The Navy said Tuesday that two single-engine boats - each about 25 feet long - were spotted about 15 hours apart on Saturday. People aboard the boats began dumping plastic bags, and the boats escaped before authorities arrived... recovered about eight tons of marijuana from the first boat and 11 tons from the second...
WTF? We now have carrier groups running drug interdiction? Something doesn't "smell right"... I think somebody may have taken some journalistic freedom with this story...

The war on drugs will be waged until everyone is locked up and we no longer have a drug problem, and we the government will spare no expense on seeing to it that anyone using a drug, thinking about using a drug, selling a drug, thinking about selling a drug, delivering a drug, or thinking about delivering a drug will be tracked down to the ends of the earth and locked up until the sun stops shining.

And we are doing it for the children!!!

And we don't care who we hurt, how much it costs, or how many constitutional violations it takes!

Oh how I wish I could have seen the faces on those drug runners when they realized they found a whole lot more trouble then they bargained for.

Yer prolly right bout it being an exaggeration though... but 19 tons is a rather large load... I wonder how it would have been fit onto a couple 25 foot boats in the first place, let alone the rest of the story....

This was my exact point... 22,000 lbs in a single 25' boat with a single engine? My feeble human mind just can't make that compute. I call

I bet you're right, their faces had to be priceless when/if the saw that carrier group!!!

Since the "end" of the "cold war" few branches of service have had to scramble to prove to congress they're worth their keep more than the US Navy. A CTF doing or helping antinarcotics ops should come as no surprise. This is one of the reasons why there are "spy" subs in existance.

Lets see here, thinking out loud...

    19 tons x 2000 lb/ton divided by 2 =19000 lb per boat

If the boat was 25 ft long, and say 6 ft width (a guess), the weed weight would lower the boat 2 ft in the water +-. If the density of the weed in the bag was say 20 lb/ft, there would have been 950 cubic ft of the stuff, and 950 / (25x6) = 6'4".

A 6'4" tall x 25 ft long x 6' wide block of neatly stacked weed bags with a single prop motor pushing it.... That would be funny to see.

Ok...time for a pictoral reality check...

SAN DIEGO (AP) -- The U.S. Navy says an aircraft carrier group recovered about 19 tons of marijuana dumped from small boats in the Pacific Ocean near California's border with Mexico.
    And then there is...

The Navy said Tuesday that two single-engine boats - each about 25 feet long - were spotted about 15 hours apart on Saturday. People aboard the boats began dumping plastic bags, and the boats escaped before authorities arrived
So...please tell me how it is that this...

Outran a fully fueled, armed and battle ready fleet of this....

Something smells fishy and it aint the soggy ditchweed.
They can have those planes in the air in minutes if they want to catch something.
"Congress can raise taxes because it can persuade a sizable fraction of the populace that somebody else will pay."-Milton Friedman

Direct democracy is a gang rape. Eight men vote to rape one woman and the woman has to accept it because the majority decided that it was ok. A constitutional republic on the other hand is eight men and one woman with a full mag. Think about it for a while until it hurts your head.

Don't escort carriers or light carriers also operate in battle groups? Was it a supercarrier battle group? Or something smaller like a light carrier (helos only). ?

We got some Navy experts here. I hope they chime in.

It was the carrier USS Nimtz, and it's carrier group, and it was conducting "pilot tests" when the ships were spotted. Helos were sent to scope them out. The total haul from 3 different boats was 19,000 pounds(9 1/2 tons)...not 19 tons(38,000 lbs).
No enemy of America would have ever been killed if they didn't show up to be killed. HDR

So they HAPPENED upon drug smugglers while doing drills. BIG DIFFERENCE than sending out a Super Carrier Group to interdict Drug Smugglers!!!!! I love the guys who criticize us for wasting money (to be fair we DO waste tons of money most of the time) when they got the facts wrong. But we did NOT spend millions of dollars sending a CVA attack group against a bunch of drug smugglers. US Naval vessels are supposed to stop illegal activity in American waters when they see it, though I suspect that they usually make a call to the USCG most of the time.
