    small water purifier??

    looking for suggestions.

im looking for something small, cheap, and effective. something to pack out that i can use to filter water from clean stream/lakes. i have a huge heavy duty one that can suck enough clean water from sewage for a family of 50, but it is large, awkward and heavy, not something id carry around.

    ideas?

    well, kind of.

i was looking for something like this:

    http://www.sportsmansguide.com/net/cb/cb.aspx?a=815877

    or this:

    http://www.sportsmansguide.com/net/cb/cb.aspx?a=455792

but i was looking for opinions from ppl who have actually used them before. im looking for something to actually USE. to throw in a pack and go hiking, to minimize the amount of water id have to carry. not some prepper shit that i will throw in a bag because i *think* i need it and then never touch again. so id like first hand testimony of what actually wrks for ppl that have used them.

frankly, most of the places i go have clean enough streams that i dont think i need filtration, but i dont want to take any chances.

These are popular with the ultra-lite backpackers. You can screw them onto most plastic bottles so they like to save weight and stick these on a one-liter. I think they are boiling most of their water though.

Here's one that is the real dope though. A little spendy but that's mostly because you won't be buying replacements very often so these guys have to make their money from that initial sale.

You could put fresh AIDS blood in that thing and get clean water out the other end.

yeah, $160 is a bit much for my budget. i get out maybe 3-4x a year, 2-3 days, so figure 15gal/yr max usage. imo, that dosent justify too much to be spent on it.

another thing, on the subject of water purification, i remember a few yrs back there was a whole big shit about these little packs that could make drinking water out of fetid swamp water. big stories about how they were using them in africa to stop all the waterborne bacterial diseases. they hit the market for a few months here, then you never saw or heard of them again. im pretty sure they were from pur too.

i suppose $80-90 is doable, but that is certainly the upper limit.

any hands on experience with those?

Katadyn vario is what i have, works very well for how relatively small it is. Ive used mine several times a year for several years, camping and backpacking on state lands. Filters are pretty cheap and easy to find.

I use a 16 oz. stainless steel cup and I boil the water in a fire. The downside, of course, is the lack of convenience. That Life Saver Bottle looks pretty neat. You can't purify water any better short of boiling, but the price is a little steep. Then again, you get what you pay for, and you probably don't want to skimp on something like a water filter...

    Here you go: http://www.shopsimplerliving.com/big_berkey.html

It is not cheap - but the filters are cleanable - making it a very good deal in the long run. This is from the frugal squirrel web site BTW.

i really like the cleanable filter idea. with having to replace filters, i get the idea that some day, ill need a new filter and they will be obsolete. knowing i can reuse what i have is a big plus.

still havent bought anything yet. no hurry at all, wont be out hiking till spring now. i was looking at one of the 2 that were on the govt surplus site, but the one i was eyeballing looks to be gone now. the other one they have requires batteries, another undesirable feature.

If you want a truly "forever" filter system, then just get a 5 Gallon bucket, a spigot for the bottom, some stainless steel screening and some activated charcoal. Place the charcoal in the bottom, the screening over it and the spigot at the bottom edge - fill the bucket with water and as you draw it out, it filters through the charcoal. Run out of charcoal? Make your own. Just oxygen "starved" burnt wood. Also useful in mellowing and aging wiskey

Saw them for sale for 60.00 and was thinking about getting one? It looked like you used this wand to stir the water until the UV's had killed all of the bad guys in the water/?? Anyone?
