The chances of a civilian surviving a fire fight against a trained force is more or less a fantasy than a reality. Honestly, it is good to have ammo around for defensive situations...but in reality if the average civilian finds himself in a world were medicine, clean water, and food are in short supply then, what little moving he/she is doing armed should be more or less focused on finding essentials for survival. If a civilian finds themselves in a immediate situation where they need more than two+ 30 round mags to survive then, they messed up in their planning somewhere and are probably screwed.
The issue with having a ton of ammo creates a terrible necessity for having to transport it. If the defensive area that it is kept comes under severe attack. One molotov thrown by rioters or looters can pretty much ruin a defensive position house/base camp etc. Then what is "one" going to do in the middle of a fire and/or fire fight? Try to move 5-10 K rounds? Or get women, children and old folks out of there?
Another thing...how many folks prepping for SHTF are 50+, rely on insulin, meds for blood pressure, have bad backs, knees and joints? I am not talking specifically about this board but I have friends who are prepper types that have tons of supplies but in reality would be up the creek in about a week without meds. (That is no shot at your older guys)
This idea of banding together and hitting the woods Red Dawn style sounds exciting but in an age of drones, infra-red and nightvision....its not only a failed concept against a well oiled machine, but suicidal.
If you find yourself in a SHTF situation that lasts more than a month and you have fired off more than a 150 rounds in a two week period for hunting and defensive purposes...then you have planned wrong, and brought to much attention to yourself and are most likely screwed.
If you want to survive SHTF for long periods of time then expose yourself to the worst conditions possible. Learn to sleep in your crawl space at night, then the attic, find some woods to walk through with no flashlight on a cold rainy night, lay in a really cold creek as long as you can, learn to eat stuff that grosses you out, spend all day sitting in a cramped space like your closet trying to be as quite as possible (cutting the heat down in the winter, and the AC down in the summer), then learn to do the same method in a car, truck bed, and under a vehicle. A fellow who can pop out of an inclosed space with nothing but a Kabar is way more dangerous than a person firing off 100 rounds and giving away his position to those he doesn't see.
I have had to prove to some of my friends how this can be done (being sneaky that is). I have snuck in their houses while they are home and watched them do every thing from cooking to feeding the pets, and watching their g/f's/wives clean house before I pop out and scare the crap out of them. One buddy of mine (who always carries) got the scare of a lifetime. I proved to him one night how that CCW won't save him by stalking him through town and finally sneaking up on him in a dark apartment complex and scaring him. I walked a good 20 yards up on him and scared the crap out of him by grabbing his neck and head. In a SHTF situation if I was a bad guy I could have cut his throat, took his Glock, keys and money and been gone before anyone found him. He is now a lot more alert.
I did the same thing to my buddies sister who was visiting out of town. I heard him talking and learned enough of what she drove and what she looked like...so I stalked her down in a parking lot in broad day light with him standing there and scared the crap out of both of them (by using bright colored clothes and basic walking), with nothing more than a description of her and her car.
Also another thing I have done is breakdown rifles and see if I can sneak them into friends houses and not get noticed. Just go to the bathroom and assemble them and walk out and you will scare the crap out of most people...because people do not pay ATTENTION! No I do not load them up for the record.
Remember you guys who have wives and children are in the worst shape come SHTF...all it takes is a person with a blade to pop up and catch mamma off guard while her man is out scouting...and trust me if you put her and the youngins in a dire situation she will tell you were all the guns and ammo, food, medicine etc are stored.
Learning to deal with cold, heat, cramped conditions and learning how to watch, stalk and quietly get to targets along, with questionable morals will help you more than a safe full of boom sticks and 10k worth of ammo.
I do not condone nor sponsor any criminal activity. The people I have done this stuff to are people I know and know well. Though in some cases they could have shot me. LOL
If your thinking "Well...I got a rifle that can hit out to 600 yards..etc." Well that is good, but doesn't keep the sneaky guy with a recurve bow from popping you from behind and taking your rifle either. We often say in gun culture that "guns are tools". That is true and tools have limited uses they are machines that don't think...you as a person can think, so therefore your mind is actually more powerful than the gun is. My point is guns are great, but don't rely on them like a Zebra with its legs. The Zebra can only kick so much before an organized team of lions brings it down.
Stocking up on guns and ammo had its advantages but don't turn your shooting hobby into your only method of survival. Now in my case, I have stalked and scared so many personal friends that they have seriously had an intervention with me to stop..."they get it now". LOL
And because I love them all...I hope they learned.
Am I sick in the head? No! Do I condone evil tactics? No! I just want my friends and family to keep an eye out for the worst at all times.
Sorry if this thread disturbs people and I wish no harm on anyone...but its amazing how many folks do not take this stuff seriously until you scare the crap out of them and they are so nervous they puke, or cry.
If this post offends you, than forget about SHTF. Your not going to make it.
