Interesting read on war with North Korea

US Mini-nukes and an analysis of a second Korean war

The Department of Energy is producing a new variant of the B61 gravity bomb that will be highly accurate and have a variable yield of 0.3 to 50 kilotons.

The existing (but to be retired) ALCM is believed to have a selectable yield of 5 KTs or 150 KTs. The lower yield is presumably for the boosted primary alone, and the larger yield for the two-stage weapon. The life-extension program for the W80 warhead, which will be carried by the LRSO missile, is expected to provide closer to a “dial-a-yield” option that would allow a number of yield options.

There is a debate that making the mini-nuclear weapons more capable and flexible would encourage their use in say a conflict with North Korea.

The US can destroy North Korea’s air defenses using conventional weapons in about a week just as the US destroyed Air Defenses of Iraq. The question of whether missiles have more stealth or whether there is selectable nuclear yield on 1000 or 2000 nuclear weapons in the US arsenal is not significant. This is because the US can wage more limited nuclear war with lower yield nuclear weapons already.

A 2012 military analysis of North Korea’s attack Seoul would be less damaging than more simplistic analysis.

Despite the thousands of artillery pieces, only 700 heavier guns and rocket launchers, plus the newer 300-millimeter MRLs, have the range to strike Seoul. Seoul has extensive air raid shelters for civilians that will quickly reduce the exposed population density. The North will struggle to keep these heavy artillery units supplied with shells, particularly with its aging supply system. Finally, U.S. and ROK forces will quickly begin hunting down units participating in the bombardment, causing their numbers to drop almost immediately.

Couple of MOAB plus some good old carpet bombing should be enough. On the the other hand, China should be warned that if the spoiled brat of the north does detonate a nuke on US soil, Chinese people should look away from Korea until after the big flash.

Cool. What about the south? Will they not instantly come under direct arty fire for an undetermined
amount of time, now how do you deal with this. My answer is to tell the south we are pulling
out. We have been here 60 years and you are a prosperous society and you can defend yourself.
It is time to grow up and recognize YOUR threats......

What do words or law for that matter mean anymore? They are their own happy people sitting on the beach with our umbrella

By your comments you don't know much about South Korea do you?

ROK has an active military of 625,000 and active reserves of 3.1M
Like Israel, South Korea has mandatory military service and men 18-35 must serve. If they're not suitable for military service they still have to do 2 years national service, usually public works or other things like parks service. Men with doctors or law degrees can serve as those fields for the government during their civil service time. Women are exempt but are allowed to volunteer in various specialized military services.

The USA spends 3.3% of our GDP on Defense, South Korea spends 2.6%, which is far greater than any of the other countries in the region. The Korean war never actually ended, it's just been a really really LONG cease fire. The DMZ is run by the USA. the USA doesn't want to relinquish its influence in the area. Unlike places like AFRICA, Asian countries are economic super powers and things that can destroy them will really REALLY fuck up the world's economy. America also gets a ton of our stuff from Asia, from both strong allies and former enemies (like China and Vietnam). War in the region will fuck up our economy and plunge the world in to chaos. Again, unlike AFRICA (which if it was nuked no one would notice) or SOUTH AMERICA (again, if it was to disappear tomorrow, we'd barely notice) ASIA is a lot like EUROPE in that it's super important to trade and the stability of the world.

Using nukes anytime, anywhere is a BAD idea. Things can get out of hand quickly, and there are already more than enough long lived toxic radioactive particles in the atmosphere.

As far as North Korea... if Bill and Hillary can whack anyone that gets in their way, then why can't a few CIA specialists sneak into NK and make Kim Small Dong whatever the F his name is disappear?

The LAST thing we need is for MORE young American soldiers dying in some third world shithole to "keep the peace". Just freakin kill Kim Dong whatever and put an end to the tyranny.

I know the N Koreans have grown up with the delusion that Kim Dong is some kind of deity and their "great leader", but I'll bet they get over that real quick when they get a taste of FREEDOM without fear of being executed by a self centered puny little fat fuck of a boy......

So they can defend themselves. News just up from the wire N. Korea has developed a nuclear war head small enough
to place on a missile. Lovely.

See that just it. If a coup took place it would be handled in house and hopefully Kim's brother would be placed in power. This would avoid a lot of bloodshed, but might be against Chinese national goals. The other kim is nothing like his dad or his brother, he's more or less the opposite, he'd likely free the North Koreans.
And that may be why China allows despot kim to do as he pleases because NK is China's proxy. A lot of people think NK does whatever it wants, I think kim doesn't fart before asking Xi's permission.

I agree there is no N. Korea without China. There was no N. Korea without China as they were routed in 1950.

I sincerely doubt that NK has a small nuke. Hell I doubt that they even have one that WORKS.

The last few they tested were plutonium fueled implosion devices, and according to radiochemical analysis of the air afterwards, they were duds (didn't go high order but just fizzled yielding a kiloton or so instead of the 20-30+ expected).

They either need to perfect implosion and levitation, or else build a several billion $$$ diffusion plant to enrich uranium. I doubt that they can accomplish either.

Speaking of China... if NK DOES have a working small nuke that can be used on a rocket, then the ONLY place they could have gotten it from is China. I'm sure they can't build their own.

If that's the case and NK sends a Chinese made device to nuke someone.... then what?

    THAT has me worried.

Iran might have provided some input as well.
