There's a steam train right near me: https://www.aarailroad.com/

I once rode in the open car and found lots of grains of soot in my hair (about the size of "sea salt" you find in restaurants - in the bottle before it's ground).

At the 1/2 way point of the trip, the engineer uses an oil can to lubricate the valve slide bearings and turns a bolt in each of the connecting rod bearings to force some grease into the bearings.

It's ultra cool, and I absolutely love the sound of the engine, the sorta of harsh, humid smell of the steam and the coal exhaust.

Which reminds me.... time to plan another trip out there. The fall foliage seen from the train is WAY cool!

I actually have quite a collection of older (1960's and 1970's Schwinn bicycles - all "Made in Chicago"). It's another hobby of mine that I don't think I've ever mentioned here before.

By the way. the seat (saddle) is on backwards (that is, the seatpost clamp is facing rearward when it should be forward).

Yeah and I had a REAL 1948 Daisy Red Ryder BB rifle and the day after I shot myself in the thumb, the rifle disappeared.

I shot myself in the thumb and the BB was under the skin, so it was a dark red-grey bump under a red area. It looked JUST LIKE a cap (the kind you use in a cap gun - the red paper rolls).

Since the skin above the BB was lifted up and already "dead", my mother simply took a razor blade, made a slit on top of where the BB was and popped it out (then squeezed some blood out to clean it).

An application of mercury laden Merthiolate and a band-aid and I was all better (except I didn't have my rifle anymore).

This begs the question; how did you manage to shoot yourself in the thumb with a rifle? A BB pistol, I can see, but a rifle seems like you had to go to some lengths to pull that shot off.

    Well.................

I pulled the trigger - it went click (didn't fire). So, like a dumbass, I begin to open it up to see what was jammed and/or where.

I had the rifle on my lap, right hand over the muzzle.

As it started to open, whatever was stuck became unstuck and the BB fired, right into the "pad" of my right thumb.

It went under the skin and traveled about 1/2 inch and left a dark reddish-gray bump, surrounded by red, injured skin (which is why it looked just like a red roll cap for a cap gun).

    Fuggin' squib loads.....

By the way, do you know what the explosive used in roll caps is? (hint: not gunpowder)... and no fair Google-ing it.

If it's not flash powder then my next guess is nitrocellulose.
