Hello everybody, I just signed up today because I just got my first AK47 the other day. I got a nice, new WASR 10/63 from CAI. I have always wanted an AK to go along with all my other rifles and I already have a Norinco sks-m so I already have a good little chunk of 7.62x39 and AK mags laying around. I saw an ad for a new sporting goods store that opened in my town and they had the WASR's for $419 with two 30 round mags so I went up and grabbed one because that's as good as I can find online and then you have to add shipping and ffl acceptance fee. It has a very, very slight canted front sight (most likely isn't even bad enough to effect accuracy) and I had to open up the magwell a bit with my dremel because it took the two mags it came with but 99% of my other AK mags (mostly eastern europe surplus) wouldn't fit. Also the stock was that horrible bone dry bare wood that looks all wrong on an AK. I have it apart right now and am waiting for my second coat of minwax bombay mahagony polyurethane to dry. It seems to be coming out very nice but I'm wishing I would have done a red dye so the really red russian look. It's still waaay nicer than what it was though. Once it's done I'll get some pics and put them up on here. My future plans also include cutting/grindng the weld on the barrel nut and putting on a nice slant muzzle brake(also tossing around the idea of an AK-74 brake too because they supposedly work VERY well and they look really good) and polishing up the bolt carrier so it has the nice "true" AK look. I don't want it like chrome but I want it shiny looking. I also want to find a nice bakelite red/brown pistol grip to replace the black one it has now. Here is a pic of it (crappy cell phone pic) the night I got it and another pic of it next to my sks-m. I'm hopefully gonna get out to the range sometime this week to put some rounds through it. I'll post some pics of it again after the stock is done.

Thank you, yeah I'll definitely be around to learn all I can about my new rifle. Well I got some pics of it with the stock re-done and the bolt carrier polished up. It didn't turn out as red as I wanted it to. I might strip it and use the rit dye method I've read about and coat it with clear poly. It still looks a lot better than what it did though to me. I was trying pics with and without the flash so that's why some are different. I'm not much with this camera, my wife is the pic master. Not to mention I had to take them inside because it's so crappy outside. When it get nice and sunny out I'll take it out for some nice outside pics. Hope ya'll enjoy the pics. And what do ya'll think of the "redness"? I'd personally like it a little redder myself, this looks kinda like aged walnut like my garand.

Thank you everyone! Yeah I really like my sks because you hardly ever see an sks-m or sks-d. They are definitely the coolest sks's in my book! It's basically an AK with an sks action. I'm contemplating doing the stock on the sks the same as my ak but I'm not sure if I want to change it since they are so rare and it's the original stock. To me it would kinda be like bubba'ing it but the stock color is hideous so I don't know. Yeah I really liked my new AK when I got it but I LOVE it now!! It looks so much better with the reddish stock and polished bolt carrier! It'll be complete when I get my bakelite grip and muzzle brake. Oh and a cleaning rod too! LOL I definitely plan on getting more AK's as money allows, I really want a nice under folder.

looks much better with the finish on it!

one word of caution though, teh black grip is likely us made and therefore one of your necessary 922r compliance parts. you might have to replace some other part to be able to use the imported bakelite grip.

and i just noticed your in bloomsburg.

i almost made the offer, but im too damn lazy to package it up, lol, but if your through the mt carmel area, ive got a few extra bakelite pistol grips around if you want one. have a few slant brakes too, but again, your probably gonna have to use a us made one on there.

and, id have to do some digging, but i thnk i have a rusty shitty cleaning rod that i found in a parts box. i was going to give it to abpt1 till he found one. it will need some cleaning and a nice coat of hi temp grill paint, but its fully functional .

Your Wasr Gp 10/63 looks Great ! You can order a USA made Muzzle brake anywere.
Then you can replace your Pistol grip with a baklite one...

Thank you everybody for the warm welcome! Yeah I definitely LOVE the new look of my rifle now, just wish it were a little redder but it'll be ok.

Deth I go over to that area from time to time and if you wanted to meet somewhere I would be very greatful for the grip and brake! I'm not sure if they all had US trigger groups or not but I noticed mine has a tapco unit, would that count as an extra US part?

Romak I got your invite and joined the romanian club, thank you.

I'll take some more pics of it outside when it gets nice out and I'll get some more quality pics of my norinco sks too and put up. Thank you all again for the warm welcome.

you would need 5 parts with the muzzle nut welded on.(6 if the muzzle device screws on and is removable) im guessing the trigger group (thats 3), the receiver, and the grip. i put gas pistons in my builds so i can keep the original furniture.

but, if you use that us made magazine in it, then with both an imported muzzle device and grip youll still be ok. ill go through the parts box next time i m in th garage, which probably wont be till after the holidays.

Oh I didn't know mags counted because they aren't really "part" of the rifle. Yeah then I can just throw in my tapco mag if they ever want to "verify" my rifle then! What are the odds you'd ever have to show your US parts content anyway? And I'm not sure but my gas piston looks super shiny and brand new so maybe it's US, would it actually be stamped US on it if it were or is it common for the rommys to have brand new rommy pistons? Thank you.

umm, slow down there. that's a romy receiver on his rifle. let's not get him confused. :D

Century generally puts US made pistons in their builds. as a rule of thumb, if the piston has 3 grooves in the head it is US made. if it has 2 grooves it would be an import........at least that's the way it was explained to me once upon a time.

here's a link to the applicable parts for 922(r) compliance that may help you out. http://922r.com/

and let me extend a slightly belated welcome to the forum! it's always great to see new AK nuts on here.

Thank you broondog. I looked and my piston has two wide grooves in it so I'm guessing it's an import. Thank you for the link and the welcome too.

Hey all, I'm new here also. Just picked up a WASR 10/63 for $495, but since it was a CUGIR from 1966, and came with synth folding stock & handguard, instead of the wood furniture, felt reasonable.

The local WASR in stock at the stores here was $700, which I thought was ridiculous.

I'm looking forward to putting lots of rounds downrange. It's the whole reason I picked up a WASR, actually. I don't care about super accuracy, or doing competitions. I'm interested in shooting at the range as a hobby, and for the price, you can't really beat a WASR.

Thanks. It's a lot friendlier atmosphere here. So many online forums, people are just constantly shitting on WASRs and AK's in general, talking about how their AR is so much better at everything. I like to use the quote:

"What I lack in accuracy, I make up for in volume."

Sorry I missed welcoming you to the site, (AK)1000shots! :welcome:

I want to address the gas piston thing. At one time it was believed that the number of grooves told you where the piston was made, but I have too many US built AKs and others that were "certified" that have gas pistons with only 2 grooves. To be honest, in my total AK collection, I believe I can honestly say that all have 2 groove pistons.

The best way to be sure your rifle meets 922(r) and Title 27 CFR 478.39 is to use a US made mag guaranteeing three US parts. If you can't use or don't want to use a US furniture set, the Tapco fire control group is marked properly to let you know where it was made.

The only problem with using a US mag is that if you accidently insert an imported mag, at best only ten black helicopters will appear overhead with men coming down ropes, 15 black Blazers will appear around you with huge men in black coming at you. At worst the sun will explode ending all life as we know it. That parts count is soooo important!!!!:copper::copper::copper::dizzy::dizzy ::dizzy:

HA HA HA That's kind of what I was thinking AKnut. I've been collecting and shooting a long time now and have shot at many different ranges and places and have never seen or even heard of the "men in black" showing up and tearing down your gun checking for compliance. I'm sure it's kind of an issue with commie states like Mass, NY and Kali but out here in the backwoods of PA I don't see it being much of an issue. Hell I've even seen guys out with "modified" rifles and glocks that shoot full auto (it's kinda cool but a huge waste in my book as full auto is useless for anything but looking cool and wasting a ton of expensive ammo) and nobody ever showed up to investigate. Thanks for the tips though on what makes it compliant. Luckily I do have one tapco mag that I can always throw in it if it ever does get questioned.

Oh and welcome to the board AK 1000 shots.

Help a noob out. But what is that design for above the trigger? Almost butterfly looking, maybe something snaps in. Right where the rivits are above the trigger. My Rommy G and others I have noticed don't have it and some do. Enlighten me :)

It's the scope mount base. It uses a clamp style scope mount. It's an actual seperate plate riveted to the reciever.

Your making every one paranoid.... lmao... looks out the window oh God hear they come ! quickly puts in his tapco magazine .. aww im safe now ! 922r police cant tell i had that evil european magazine in a few seconds ago ! evil laugh ha ha ha

tapco g2 trigger set counts as 3 US parts the gas piston 1 us part the US made muzzle brake 1 us part tapco US made magazine counts as 3 us parts. If you had a brand new US made stock set Buttstock =1 pistol grip =1 upper an lower hand gaurds are combines = 1 US part...

If you had a brand new US made stock set Buttstock =1 pistol grip =1 upper an lower hand gaurds are combines = 1 US part...

the lower hg is the counted part. if you have a us made lower handguard, its 1 us part, regardless of where your upper hg was made. the upper hg is not a counted part and is irrelevant.

also, a stock set usually includes a pistol grip also, making it 3 parts.
