I just watched it this afternoon. Lots of good action but I noticed the front sight of one of the AK's.
According to this it's a Norinco 56

This is the closest it had as far as a look at it. There are much better views in the movie. It seems to be taller than I'm used to seeing and a sort of two tiered type of system. Kind of an open European post guard on top with a hole under that.
Best I could do here

Maybe I'm seeing things but just wondered if there was such a thing.

I asked a movie armorer about your question (I AM in California ya know!). He said when the first Chinese AKS rifle came in, a few of them had their enclosed hood 'ground off with a grinder" to emulate the 'open hood' of the Russian style, but only a few. MOST of the Chinese AK-47 rifles in Movie Armory Inventory were stock weapons, since the filmmakers didn't seem to give a shit about accuracy a lot of the time. If you want, I can try to take a picture of one of those OPEN HOOD Norinco AK rifles, or at least a closeup of the front sight assembly. :D

What I'm wondering about is what seems to be a hole just under the open hood site. This was the best shot I could find, it even seems to have a bulge in the frame of the site to accommodate it. Also seems to be more in line with the rear site like normal with the open one a little higher.
Maybe a quick kill of some sort??
The guy in this picture had a commander in the movie that showed it much better, which is what caught my eye in the first place.
I don't expect anyone to sit through the movie just wondering if such a thing exists.

Man thanks for all that effort tank_monkey. Is he a friend of yours?

OK it was just on again so I tried taking some shots straight off the tube.
I still haven't seen anything like this before.
