Techdirt reports that Senate bill 978 – a bill to amend the criminal penalty provision for criminal infringement of a copyright, and for other purposes – may be used to prosecute people for embedding YouTube videos.

According to Mark Masnick, if a website embeds a YouTube video that is determined to have infringed on copyright and more than 10 people view it on that website, the owner or others associated with the website could face up to five years in prison.

The owner of the site can be held liable for copyright infringment if this goes through. And it probably will.

Youtube should be the liable party here, they allow the embedding and sharing of videos. They even promote it! Anyone who wants to protect their copyright should have the ability through youtube to lock it out of any distribution. Fvck'n Stupid but so is facebook having publish rights to all your uploaded media content....

Funny thing, I got an email from my ISP yesterday warning of copyright infringements by it's subscribers.
They have laid down a three strike rule. After 3 times of violating copyrights, you're no longer allowed to use their servers and may be liable.

A typical american commits three felonies a day without being aware of it. Its true. We have less and less freedom every day. When will the sheeple wake up?

When they figure out what the "Arbeit macht frei" sign over the entrance to the camp means.

That's why I have my own file server. Anything I put up... is mine anyway. No way to get sued.

I think we'll look back on the last ten years as a golden age of freedom. The internet was, and still is to a degree, the Wild West of global free speech, with people from all over the world chattering away like monkeys.

The politicians, CEOs, bankers and their pals, hate it.

How dare the proles have access to information which we don't control, buy and sell? It's unnatural and wrong... like a dog wearing knickers! It must be stopped!

Every day brings a new effort by the political class and their friends to control, manage and manipulate the internet. They're trying to put the genie back in the bottle. Will they succeed? Depends how hard and clever we fight.

It's one reason I like Gunsnet. As a Euro-lefty I disagree with 90% of the politics here and find gun-nuttery laughable...

... except for the love of freedom it represents. It's groupings like Gunsnet who should form a key part of the resistance against those attacking our internet freedoms.
