Richard.... you seem to be the knife guy so maybe you can answer this...

I had a Buck 639 with the camo sheath back when I was much younger. Lost it hunting one day and have decided, for nostalgia, I wanted to get another. About the only place I can find them is on e-bay and the prices are outrageous. My questions...

Why are these things bringing so much money? Are they that special or what?
Is there any other place to get them other than e-bay? I don't think they make them anymore.

Thanks for any info you can give me, bud.

Seems like a good price now but wait til it ends. It will probably double and that one is in rough shape. Most seem to go around 75 and up in used condition. Seems a bit steep to me but maybe I am being too conservative.

Been looking at getting one myself and have bid on several on ebay (following one now as a matter of fact) but refuse to pay too much or for something with issues. There are a couple of reasons they are so desirable.

#1. No longer made
#2 They look a lot like the BuckMaster 184 SEAL knife, at least the blade is similar.
#3 They feel good in the hand.

I picked up a 619 the other day and even though I have a regular 119 the rubber handle on the 619 is way nicer for actual use. Very comfortable and grippy. Looking now for a 620 and of course the 639.

Most/a lot of the 639's I see at auctions seem to have been improperly sharpened or abused. Why folks use that sharpener on the back of electric can openers I can't understand? Those are the ones you'll see in the under $50 range. If you can find one that is unmolested for under $65-$70 you'll probably be doing pretty well. That's what I'm looking for any way.

IIRC... I got mine at K-Mart for about 25 bucks back in the early 80's. It was the best knife I ever had. Felt good, kept an edge, and was just about the right size for an all-around knife. Skin't many a deer with that knife til I lost it around 89. Whelp... guess I'll have to reserve myself to the fact that I gotta pay big bucks if I want one... and... I want one. :cool1:

FWIW I was able to finally win an auction last night for a decent example, ($65 including shipping). Probably the 4th or 5th attempt but I finally got one. If the photos and description are accurate I should be pretty pleased. Will post pics when ever it arrives, hopefully later this week or weekend.

My suggestion would be to start checking ebay and decide what you want to spend and keep at it until you get one that you like. Now I just need to find a 620 that hasn't met a can opener knife sharpener or a bench grinder. If I run across something on the For Sale boards on my knife forums I'll give you a heads up.
