I like that 2nd one better, getting the optic back away from the gas tube. My concerns on the first type is that the heat will cook the optic if you really had to do sustained firing. I think any AK owner has felt their handguards get unplesantly hot in as little as 4 mags of rapid fire. Aluminum guards are going to be all the more effective at wicking heat out of the barrel and gas tube and putting it into the sight mount and handguard. Better have a forward grip for both models just shown, your hand isn't going to stay on them very long.

Nicely done videos btw.

While I agree that the second one (Mako) runs cooler, the Aimpoint that the US PALM system (first one) mounts will easily handle the heat. The Ultimak system came before these and replaced the gas tube with a railed one. I ran an Aimpoint on there for a while and despite my best efforts I couldn't get it hot enough to shut the sight down. Many people run the Ultimak system and swear by it. Plus, the US PALM mount doesn't actually touch the gas tube, although it sits very close to it.

Here's a test I did last winter. I will reconduct this test this summer.

How long did it take to fire the 120 rounds? Would you try this test using the wood handguards for the ultimak?

Thanks

I can't bring myself to add rails on my ak, I like the classic look and iron sights on mine. It's pretty tempting for me to buy a cheap wasr, just to add stuff on it though.

Well that was quite interesting. What was the outside temperature when you conducted the test? Given the recoreded temperatures the sight and rail reached on the Ultimak those items got quite hot. In the summer say it's 85° F air temperature. The weapon will start out more or less at air temperature. Then add in the heat increase documented and you're starting to look at approaching the boiling point of water. Hot air is going to cool less efficiently so you should see a much bigger heat increase on all 3 components.
