Check this out: http://www.infiltratorsystems.com/

I am looking to do as much myself as possible in building my next house. One of the things that's pricey is the installation of a septic.

Now keep in mind, the area that I'm building seems to have very little in the way of regulation in regards to septics, and such. Not so in Texas - at least in my county where it has to be an aerobic system and you have to have it inspected every so often - by law.... which is expensive and a PITA.

Anyhoo - a member on another board mentioned this to me - and went and found the site. Basically, if you can get a ditch and hole dug, you can install your own septic system.

I will get a "perk" test done - in fact, I want one for the creation of a pond anyway.

Anyhoo - this would take all of the labor cost out of the equation, which is probably at least half of the cost!

You going to use a back hoe or a Ditch Witch to do the leach field lines?

My plastic septic tank is collapsing slowly. FYI. 17 years old. I've owned the house for 6 years. Gonna have to spring for a new one in the next few years. Whoever installed it didn't do such a good job.

Fun, huh?

A. Your toilets back up.
B. Your ground sinks in over the tank.

Supposedly every 5 or 6 years you should get the tank opened and have it pumped out to get rid of the solids that don't digest. Otherwise this stuff will flow into the leach field lines and plug them solid so your fluids have no place to go.

Also, keep trees a GOOD distance from leach lines. Tree roots love to invade these pipes.

I don't know what I'm going to use for the install - if we're having our pond dug/made at the time I need this done, I may just have that guy dig the trench and holes for me.

Or, I'll just rent a backhoe.

And lots of good info here -thanks guys. The drain field needs to be well cleared, check. Keep trees back. Check.

Concrete tanks bedded and set properly will last almost indefinently. I would also go with schedule 40 PVC pipe instead of the light weight sewer/drain piping.

Hope you pass the perk test, the alternitive is an aerobic system that will run from $5K to $10K or more...

Thanks Schuetz.

I have always grown up with city sewer and water and natural gas.

So my first house I fell in love with and bought has septic, a well and propane.....

I'm still learning about all three, and the fact of the septic or well going bad....stresses the shit outta me.

Book-marked the "Infiltrator Systems" Linky, Thank You!

FL requires Septic and Well work to be done by Lisenced contractor, if I'm not mistaken...maybe we can build the shell of the house DIY.

I too need to build from scratch, we are actually going to be planting pines, mine was a "real estate cut" property, but cheap land is cheap land, very sandy soil, but most things grow.
