If you are like me, you HATE the trigger on Mosins.
I did some searching looking for a solution. I found a site where a Mosin owner apparently came up with a way to make the Mosin trigger adjustable. The only evidence of the work is a threaded hole under the cocking piece of the bolt and not seen unless the bolt is removed. There are NO modifications to the trigger or sear.
I figured I had nothing to lose if I attempted this on my "truck" Mosin, so I disassembled it and proceeded to mark the end of the sear spring on the receiver. I then followed the instructions in the link below.
The only thing I did differently was to use an 8-32 set screw since I had no 6-32. I compensated the difference by moving the scribed sear spring location the difference between the 6-32 and 8-32 screw rearward.(about .020")
With the machine work done, I tightened the set screw against the sear spring, noticing the trigger moving to the rear as I tightened it. After some pressure was applied, I inserted the bolt to ck for trigger pull. All the front to rear slop has been removed and the sear broke less than before. I continued to tighten the set screw until the bolt no longer stayed cocked when closed. I loosened the screw until the bolt stayed cocked when the rifle was slammed butt first on the floor. After working the bolt 20-30 times, and slamming the rifle on the floor as many times, I was confident the trigger was adjusted correctly.
The results are, the take up travel has been reduced to zero. The sear is breaking cleaner and the pull is greatly reduced. I have no way of knowing what the pull is since I don't have a trigger pull scale, but it is noticeably better. I will say the pull and sear breaking is as good as many commercial rifles. I'm happy.:cool1:
