Hi,

Just wondering, is there any reason that an AK-47-specific muzzle brake could not be used on an AK-74 style rifle? To my thinking all they do is redirect the gasses, and since the caliber is smaller there shouldn't be any problems there.

Hello. :)

You are correct, as long as the flash hider will screw onto the muzzle, then yeah, it'll work - not as well as a correctly sized one but it will work and be safe to use.

Thanks for the info. As I suspected, but good to have a second opinion on it!

Never try to use an AK74 (5.45x39) (5.56x45) brake on a AK47 (7.62x39) though. The 47 is chambered for a larger round and when you try to push that thru a 74 brake you might need a professional doctor to work on your cranium while your rifle is getting rebarreled..................................

The big thing is how the brake is installed on the AK-74 type rifle. Most attach to threads on the front sight and as far as I know there are not many, if any brakes other than an AK-74 that will fit. If the barrel itself is threaded to a standard 14x1mm left hand their are zillions. As with the smaller O.D. barrels threaded to 1/2x28 right hand, many to choose from.

One thing about the standard AK-74 brake is that it is one of the most efficient at reducing felt recoil on those rifles.
