View Full Version : What Sight to Use With a Side Mount?

I have two Wasr's, one double stack, one single stack. I have one side mount and two scopes i could mount. Here's the mount and one of the scopes

http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j169/marc780/SCOPE-MT009.jpg

The scope is a NCSTAR "sniper scope" lighted reticle (a useless feature i think) that works fine on my other rifle, a Stag M4gery, even after 1000 rounds. Very accurate at 200 yards. It is shown in the photo mounted on the single stack WASR. The scope is not so accurate on the WASR AK. On the photo gun it shot several feet high at 200 yards and i could not adjust the scope low enough. On my new double stack it was so inacurate i could not even see the bullet hit the dirt at the same range! I think this must be due to the very high mounting point and very straight angle of the riveted side scope mount on the WASR.

I have an expensive air gun scope, from my RWS spring piston .177 pellet gun that i am thinking of using instead. Air gun scopes are to the best of my knowledge, overbuilt and the lenses are braced forward and back, and probably would stand up to the recoil of an AK (i think). I know air gun scopes are meant for shorter ranges but am wondering if it might just work.

Does anybody know what is a good low to mid priced scope that is going to work on a side mount for 100 - 200 yards? And is my air gun scope idea stupid or might it work?

I personally would not use an air gun scope on a .30 cal rifle. That's just me though.

It looks like the side mount is the K-VAR KV-04S. Is that correct? If so, I have read that they are great mounts. No personal experience however.

I have also heard good things about the Weaver V7 2.5 - 7

Get some decent rings and you should be good to go.

My suggestion: A Kobra.

Check this link: http://tantal.kalashnikov.guns.ru/kobra1.html

I have one. It's nice, rugged, light and reliable. And it holds zero when removed and reinstalled. Looks-wise it also "fits" the Kalashnikov.

(edit to add): It also uses standard AA cells (2 of them) so you can use Duracell lithium cells and be good to go in any temperature, hot or cold).

+1 on the KOBRA!

I use one on both of my folders. Another one I'm considering is a PK-AS.

Kobra red-dots were a good deal once-upon-a-time. However, they are now difficult to find, and cost significantly more than they used to. Thereby making them not so good of a deal anymore. Less expensive, better quality units are out there now. Also, Tantal no longer sells products.

If you were going to go with a red-dot you might consider this: Vortex Strikefire w/ RS AKM Mount (http://www.aimsurplus.com/product.aspx?item=XRSCOMBO&name=Vortex+Strikefire+w%2f+RS+AKM+Mount+Package&groupid=84) If it is as quality a unit as my Vortex SPARC I have mounted on my Sig 556 (and by all accounts it is) it is much better than a Kobra, and you can't get a better red-dot without going to a much more expensive Aimpoint or EOtech.

You could mount either a Vortex Strikefire or SPARC to the mount you currently have, but be aware that you'll have a "chin weld" instead of a "cheek weld" if you catch my meaning.

i like the Vortex a lot. Looks really good and the ergo fits the ak Perfectly! I want i but - I gotta save up for it though, in the meantime, what's a decent stop-gap for under a $100?

I bought a cheap T1 clone and mounted on my front handguard. Problem was that I could not cowitness my iron sights. I found this side mount from Knight's Armament Co http://www.heroestactical.com/kac-micro-aimpoint-t1-offset-mnt-blk.html and mounted on my front side rail. It is designed for an AR, but after a slight mod to my handguard this thing fits and looks awesome. I know that Primary Arms makes some pretty good T1 style Red Dots for a reasonable price.

Why waste your time on a sidemount?

Either go with the MI AK Mini Dot (http://www.midwestindustriesinc.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=category.display&category_id=421) and an Aimpoint or go Ultimak.
