Are any of those replacement dust cover mounts worth a crap?

Don't anyone get their knickers in a knot, I'm just asking.

For now...:firedevil::evil-bbq:

My experience has been that they are junk... May have been the cheap Chinese optics though. ;)

Junk.
If you're handy, make your own.
I did for my AK, stabilized the top cover and it never wiggles, rattles, and best of all, it holds zero.

Hmmm, I don't see why that couldn't be done with a spare SKS dustcover...:gruebel:

I'm pondering ideas to consolidate a couple of projects, one of which is a 7.62x39 hog popper/deer rifle and scoping my Yugo SKS came to mind BUT the mod has to be totally reversable which a replacement dust cover would be.

Thanks!

Back in the day, I had a chicom SKS that I wanted to... improve. So I tried all kinds of mounts - they were all crap. Crap.

Then, I hit on the idea of using a piece of angle steel to make one that would screw onto the side of the receiver. I drilled holes in it to lighten it up and installed a weaver rail on it. It worked quite well. I sold that abomination and some redneck in Bastrop bought it  (or should I say "fellow red neck..."?)

Seriously, the only mod to the SKS that I would consider is one of these:

Someone at the range a couple of weekends ago mentioned having those Tech Sights on his ChiCom and he really liked them.

That's still a possibility but I'd sure like to run a red-dot or 1-4x glass...:think2:

Then again, people in Hell sure would like some ice water....

I'm not the red neck you sold it to, By your description, I made one identical to it.
I mounted it on a 59/66. I still have it. I'll find it and post a pic.

What if you figured out a way to adapt one of those AK side rail mounts.

I think you might have a more stable platform just doing that instead of messing with the dust cover.

Would probably be pretty easy to install as well.

Someone is offering a Chi-Com side mount. I can't think of the company right off hand.

Well, since you are interested.....
It's part of a AR A2 detachable rear sight. I cut the shaft off that raises the sight up and down. I then cut a 1/8"x1/2"x6" piece of steel stock and pop riveted the rear sight to it. Then I riveted the steel stock/sight to a smooth Chinese top cover.
I had a guy over at CalGuns forum machine the Picatinny rail to the specs I needed. Finally, the Picatinny rail was riveted to the steel stock.

ETA: Rear sight is windage adjustable. Front sight elevation adjustable.

The important part is stabilizing the top cover.
Since this AK is my knock around rifle, the rear trunnion is threaded w/screws.
The reason I built it that way was to be able to stabilize the cover.
At the rear of the cover, I silver soldered 2 legs on each side extending down to the top rear trunnion holes.
Inserted the screws and tightened. WaLa...an aboslutely stable top cover.

The way I look at it, if someone doesn't make what you need, you've gotta do it.

Ask AZhonkey.

There is a lot of stuff you can do to improve on AKs, it's just a matter what you need.

The more I look at this and the more I think about it, I believe it would be easier to do this on an SKS vs an AK simply because the top cover is a lot beefier on the SKS...:gruebel:

Prolly so.

This way, you won't alter the SKS itself.

Millett used to make scout mounts for military rifles. I see they have discontinued them.

all the dust cover mounts are trouble just nothing but heartache if you are going to put optics on an sks you need to drill and tap thats the only way. There's the choate mount the Predator mount and a russian one (that $150). I have a choate and a predator and have been extemely happy with both (the predator has more features). I hope this helps
