View Full Version : Who's got a blade on order?

Ever since I've gotten "into" blades over the last 2-3 years it seems like I constantly have something on preorder or back order. Right now I have the following knives I'm waiting on:

Buck Collectors Club 110

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y77/rsim20011/06-07-2010086.jpg

This is a Paperstone 110 with what they call a "bare butt" meaning it has no metal bolster on the end. It's got an S30v blade with a drop point (not sure if the 110 has ever been offered in a DP) and no nail nick. Available only to BCCI members. Should ship around Xmas time.

DPX H.E.S.T. folder

http://www.eseeknives.com/hest_folder.htm

This is one I'm kind of excited about as it's the first Esee/RAT folder. Should be shipping in December as well.

No photos of this one but it's a Spyderco Military with G10 scale one one side, titanium frame lock on the other and a CPM-M4 blade. Only 500 will be made and I'm getting one! No date yet as it was mid-June to July but has been pushed back. Should be the ultimate slicer and worth double what I paid for it the day I get it in my hand.

Anyone else got anything waiting in the wings so to speak?

I have a custom Bowie on order from Tom Goodpasture...

D-2 steel, flat grind, jigged bone handle with leather sheath...$125.

He's not a master yet so I figured I'd get one from him while I can afford one.

http://www.goodpastureknives.com/American%20Handgunner%20Nov%202008.pdf

Its the knife in the middle in the big picture...reminded me of the Imperial blades of the 50's but alot better quality....I paid him $50 already to start the knife, the rest due in Sept when he's done.

I like that knife. It's got that look "down to business" yesteryear look. More of a drop point to it than a clip or traditionl bowie profile which I like. Not too say I don't like clip points. My Buck 110 is a favorite and I'm in the market for a Buck 120 General and 124 Frontiersman if I can find either at a good price and condition. I just like the way that knife looks. Please let us know what you think come September and you get it in hand.

Yeah, I've found a few for sale in the $250 range but that's a deal breaker at that price. IIRC they only stopped producing the 124 a couple of years ago so I'm gonna hit some local, out of he way gun stores and pawn shops and see if i can turn up one at a better price. The 120 is running around $150 which is better but it's not the knife the 124 is.

Was looking at these tonght. Haven't decided which one I like best.

The only real difference I can see is the Cattle King is just a little longer, 4.25" closed vis 4" for the Stockman.

Ths S&M also looks like a winner.

I ordered a custom bowie knife from Tom Goodpasture back in early July...paid a $50 deposit immediately via Paypal...he said the knife should be deliverd by mid Sept.
Mid Sept rolls around, no knife...contacted him, said he'd been really busy...expect knife by mid Oct.
Mid Oct rolls around, no knife...contacted him, said he'd been really busy...expect knife by mid Nov.
Mid Nov. is here...still no knife...says he's been really busy...by now the excitement has worn off and I'm done waiting...he says he'd like to finish it, doesn't tell me when it would be done.

I asked him for a refund...he promptly gave me my refund.

I'm sure he makes great knives but I wouldn't know.

He is also a L.E.O.

But if he plans on making a go at the knife making he needs to deliver when said...he may have to make a decision if he wants to make knives full time of keep teo jobs and not deliver on time.

If you want a knife from him prepare to wait a long time.

Ordered both of these a month or more back and just got word that they are on their way.

Spyderco Manix 2 with orange G-10 and full flat grind S30v blade, limited edition of 600pcs.

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y77/rsim20011/sp_C101GP20R.jpg
When I preordered the price was $116 so it pays to get in on these early. Probably won't have this one in hand until Saturday.

Spyderco Paramilitary 2 with carbon fiber scales and S90v steel.

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y77/rsim20011/SP81CFP2a.jpg

This one is being delivered today. I've had a Para with D2 for a few years and really like it. When the Para 2 came out I told myself to wait until they did a special run and I'm glad I did. This is a 700 pcs run that I thought for sure I got in on too late. The Para is a great design but with the Para 2 improvements, carbon fiber and S90v which many consider to be the "super steel" of super steels I'm pretty excited. This should be the ultimate slicer in this size knife.

Used my Sportmans Warehouse gift card last night to order a USMC Ka-Bar. Also won an ebay auction for a Buck 619 Gamesmate which is the Buck 119 Special with a Kraton handle instead of phenolic. IIRC Buck only made these from 1986 until 1993 which is the date code on the one I won. Not really rear or collectible but a nice addition to the collection all the same. Pics of both when they arrive

Just got one of these in the mail..

http://www.gearculture.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/byrd-byrdrench.jpg
Byrd Knives (Spyderco's Import Line) "Byrdrench". I carried a Spyderench for years and I really loved it... lost it (of course) and didn't realize that it had become a collectors item (And a collectors price to boot) and very difficult to find as Spyderco stopped making them... Fast forward a few years, I stumble upon an article about Spyderco Re-Releasing the tool under their Byrd line... well I bit hard and have been VERY happy with the results.
The best Multi-Tool for me.

I got one of these on order right now...

It's been a while since I got a new Spyderco so I ordered this newly released Navaja.

http://www.cutleryshoppe.com/spyderconavajac147cfp-carbonfiberscales-cpm-s30vblade.aspx

Kind of caught my eye when the prototype was unveiled at the Amsterdam meet back in March. Now that it's out I couldn't help myself. Was also going to get the Byrdrench (they were on Close Out at Cutlery Shoppe last week but my log in was messing up) but they are now out of stock. I'll look around and see who else has a good deal on it, if I can find one.

When the Navaja get's here I'll post some pics. Anyone else got something inbound?

The Navaja arrived at lunchtime today. Love the way it looks and feels. The ergonomics are great. The carbon fiber scales and stainless steel bolsters are very nice and the blade shape is quite eye catching. It slices very nicely. I like this one a lot.

Should have my Bucks from the auction a little later this afternoon. In the mean time I picked this Benchmade 610 Blackwood Rukus up at lunch yesterday. (sorry for the crappy photo).

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y77/rsim20011/IMGP2028.jpg

These have been discontinued for a while now and have been increasing in price pretty quickly and significantly. I've got an identical though slighly smaller version (BM 615) but have been looking for one of the larger 610's for a couple of years.

Ran across this one in a local gun shop in one of their non-gun display cabinets way over on one side of the shop. Don't know how long it had been sitting there but it was a little dirty and dusty.

Cleaned up very nicely. The 610 Rukus has the Axis lock which I love and at 4.25" of S30v steel it's not a small knife. Right around 10" overall.

While it's not one that I'll carry much if at all it's a beautifully made knife and now I have both models of this particual version. If you run across either the 610 or 615 check them out. You may like them.

Got my Buck 110's from an online auction yesterday and spent the evening with the Dremel polishing and buffing. Pretty pleased with my purchases.

One is a Limited Edition, Wild Turkey, (#51 of 500) with gold orum etched blade. Came with factory LE box and wooden (oak?) wall display stand. It's a four dot so I know it's from between 1981-86 but will have to do some more research to try and get it down to an actual year of manufacture. Very pretty Buck.

One is a Buck Custom damascus blade with elk scales. Love this one. It date to 1989.

The last one is a pretty standard 110 with cherry wood scales that dates to 1994 so even though it's the newest one it's still 17 years old.

Will try and post some decent photos at least by the weekend.

Also have another 110 arriving today. It's an Smokey Mountain Knife Works Exclusive with bone scales. It'll be my first Buck with bone so I'm hoping it's as nice looking as the photos I've seen. Love those 110's.

Let's see. This week it's all Buck again. Sportsmans Warehouse had their Buck folding Alpha Hunter with 154CM blade and rosewood scales on clearance and I had a $25 gift card so that one, actually their last one shoudl be here tomorrow.

Got a heads up that Buck had new Web Specials posted today so ordered some rather limited and special build outs. Inbound are a brass bolstered 110 with partially serrated ATS-34 blade and Buck Custom stamp. A 500 Duke, also with ATS-34 blade, nickle bolsters and rosewood scales and lastly a 192 Vanguard again with ATS-34 steel, nickle guard and butt with charcoal Dymondwood handle.

Guess I couldn't resist ATS-34 and or rosewood this time around. Man do I ever need to get to taking some pictures.

Well I got the folding Alpha Hunter on Friday. First the good. This knife is built like a tank. While they really aren't simliar at all it does remind me of the old Buck Strider 880 collaboration in that it's really substantial in manufacture. Pretty weighty with lots of steel in the frame.

The liner lock is a little on the thin side, especially compared to the Buck Strider but it locks tight with no blade play and should hold up well for most field duty. Maybe not enough blade for cracking a deer pelvis or disarticulating leg joints but for skinning and other field dressing chores as well as EDC I think it'll be a nice one.

The rosewood scales are nicely figured and give it a good, hand filling feel. Blade came nicely sharpened with a good edge edge grind. After a few minutes on my Sharpmaker it shaves well and will S cut paper quite smoothly.

The bad.

Sportsmans advertised this model as having 154CM steel. When it arrived the Buck factory box had the 154CM/BOS decal but the knife is marked 12C27M. I know Buck switched to this steel late last year or early this year but I really wanted 154CM and based on the fact that SW was putting these on clearance, (figured they were moving out the old steel model) and the fact that their website said it had 154CM that's what I expected to get.

Emailed SW customer service and told them their website needed updated and I didn't get what I ordered. In their defense they did apologize, promised to update the website and offered to pay return shipping on the knife and refund my money which I thought was about all they could really do.

I've decided to keep the knife as I do like it plus I used a gift card for part of the purchase and figured getting the gift card reinstated AND getting my CC refunded might run into issues. Still a great knife and not a bad steel. Just the principal really since I felt mislead.

One thing I did think was funny was their admission that Buck changed to the new steel for 2011. Ok, fine. So you knew the steel had changed yet after almost six months you're still not listing it correctly? Makes me a little leery about what else they might have listed wrong on their site.

Anyway, the steel screwup aside it's a very nide addition to my collection and will probably get some carry time down the road. Oh, the sheath is a nice leather burgundy model. Looks good and secures the knife well. The only issue I have is that the knife can only go in one way and to me at least it seems to present the knife more for a lefty than a righty. By that I mean when you open the top flap the thumb studs are to the rear when it's on my right hip. For a lefty they would face to the front which is how I want them to be. Guess it's just the way it's designed as I'm not aware of Buck making a left handed sheath though their website does show the knife and sheath on the left side of the model.

Overall a nice knife and one I would recommend you try out if you get the chance.

Ordered three new ones yesterday as a Father's day gift for myself. Looking at two collector Bucks next weekend that might pull down a fairly steep tariff so bearing that in mind I just ordered a few inexpensive models that I'd been meaning to try out.

1. Cold Steel American Lawman

http://www.coldsteel.com/americanlawman.html

This will be my first Cold Steel model as well as my first knife in AUS-8A. I've read some good reviews on the knife overall and the Triad lock is supposed to be a good one.
The place I ordered all three from (knifeworks) shows the older model Lawman in it's ad so I don't know if that's what I'm getting or the newer one. Main difference is the newer one lacks the steel liner so it weighs a little less. Don't really care which so I guess a surprise is a surprise.

2. Becker Eskabar

http://www.knifeworks.com/kabarbeckereseeeskabar.aspx

While I've looked at the various "Neckers" I've never bought one. Was looking at the "Becker Necker" and others when I noticed this one. Not quite as thick as others but I liked the 30 degree inclusive bevel and the full flat grind.

There are known issues with dulling when inserting the blade into the sheath but that's probably a trade off with most of these type of knives that use a tight fit in a Kydex sheath as part of the retention.

We'll see how I like it when it arrives. I've got other Becker and Kabar products so I don't expect this one to disappoint me.

3. SVORD Peasant knife

http://www.knifeworks.com/svordpeasantknifeorangepolypropylenehandle.aspx

What can I say. It's orange, its high carbon, it's less than $14 and the design is so simple a caveman could use it. Been looking at these for awhile and for the most part was just waiting until I'd decided on some other items to add to the order. Couldn't see paying $7 to ship a $14 knife on it's own.

Plan on making this one my junk drawer knife. Should be great for opening packages in the kitchen, trimming/cutting flowers on the back patio, etc.

Hope to post some pics later this week when the shipment arrives.

Went from no neckers to two in two days! Really like the Mayo line of knives and love S30v so I should be pleased plus at 50% off and free shipping I did well on the price. Now I have to figure out how to cord wrap the handles on these two?

Preordered a Chris Reeve Umnumzaan this weekend. My wife and I will be celebrating out 28th anniversay next month so I decided to get myself a little gift and take the shopping burden off her shoulders.

http://chrisreeve.com/umnumzaan.htm

Having carried a large Sebenza 21 for a few years I'm already familiar and quite pleased with CRK's product and the Zaan seems like a nice step up from the Sebenza.

Rumor has it that they are going to be making them with S35VN steel (the Sebenza already is) rather than S30V so I'm hoping my preorder will come with that steel. Even if it doesn't the S30V from CRK is damn nice and I'll still be very pleased, I'm sure.

There has also been a recent price increase in CRK product. Found my preorder at the Knife Center at the old price ($400 vis $425) with free shipping so that kind of made the decision to finally order one a no brainer.

Pics and review when ever it arrives.

Update. After two months of waiting I decided to cancel my order and get something else that was available without the wait. Guess this one will go back on the short list for now.

Well let's see ordered 6-7 of the Chinese made folders I've been hearing so much about from Navy, Gonzo, Enlan, Sanrenmu and Bee. Some look to be clones or copies of some American made models but not fakes as they aren't trying to pass them off as anything but what they are which is bargain priced knives, that seem for the most part to be pretty decent values.

Might not have them for a few weeks as they just left Hong Kong. Eight different models for under $100 delivered. I'll try my best to post some pics and reviews on them when they get here.

Also on the way is a Kershaw Speed Bump, Model 1595. They are out of production but Kershaw had some left over parts and did a run of them, 1423 pieces to be exact strictly for Amazon using Black G-10 scales and Sandvik 14c28n blades. Didn't have a Speed Bump in the collection and for $39.99 delivered I figured why not?

Might have a customized Buck 119 coming my way but won't know until tomorrow, auction on the BCCI website.

Still waiting on the CRK Umuzaan to come off back order and of course the ZT/Hinder piece is still months and months away but really looking forward to getting both of those.

Picked up a couple more pawn shop Bucks but since those are already here I'll save those for another thread. Anyone else got anything on order?

Damn this thread opened an old wound. Sitting in my stand back in early October looking for squirrels, got my JYD2 out to cut a piece of paracord I was tying a branch up out of the way with and it slipped out of my hand and fell to the ground with a "ting" sound...

Wasnt having much luck anyways so I crawled down out of the stand. There she was a foot away from a few rocks at the base of the tree... with the frikking tip chipped off allong the edge of the composite piece! All I can guess is that the tip somehow wedged in a crack and the fall impact did the rest. Unlikely but its all I can figure out...

Either way, I was so bummed out about it and still am. So she now resides in my bugout bag as a skinner/ meat cutting knife.

That's true as far as warranty repairs go but they might reblade it or reprofile the blade for a reasonable fee. An email to Kershaw might not hurt. I know the blades are very different but as I recall Buck will reblade a 110 for around $8-$10 which includes return shipping. Kershaw might offer something similar.

Well let's see. It's been a while but I've got a few more that I'm waiting on. The ZT/Hinderer Collaboration 0560 is getting pretty close to shipping, gosh has it really been five months? Hoping to see it sometime in February.

http://www.knifeworks.com/zerotolerance0561hinderercollaborationflatdarkeart h.aspx

Ordered another Spyderco Military. This one is a Knifeworks exlcusive with carbon fiber and M390 steel. Should go nicely with the one I have in M4 steel and carbon fiber. Couple of months yet for this one.

Don't have a link or a handy photo but placed an order yesterday for a new Buck 124 Frontiersman. Buck has pretty much discontinued these some time ago but is coming out with a new Limited Edition offering with black micarta scales. Should go nicely with this one in maroon micarta I picked up last year.

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y77/rsim20011/100_2424.jpg

Prices for these on the secondary market are getting pretty steep. My my standing in the BCCI this new one will only run me about $100 so I'm pretty jazzed about it. I guess that's about it for the moment unless something else catches my eye.

Picked up the latest edition of Blade Magazine on Saturday and some of the custom models, Kirby Lambert folders in particular caught my eye. Thinking I'll have to check out his work. Always something to spend money on I guess.

So who else has something on order?

I'll play. I have a Becker/Ka-Bar BK2 on order, a Himilayan Imports M43 Khukuri on order, and a Khukuri House Thamel Improved WWI Khukuri on order. I was sold when I saw one of the Gunsnet group buy Khukuris in action in Calvert, back in the day. Never got one then, was not in on the order. But finally I will have one and can't wait. Also, add a Mora cheapie, got one of those on order to toss in the toolbox. Mora knives rock.

I dont have it on order yet but im about to place a backorder for this knife, a Benchmade SOCP.

Also I am debating between 2 knives at the moment to ask for from the wife for my birthday. I am wanting either a:

Ka-Bar ZK War Sword

and a Benchmade Nimravus
http://www.emergencymatters.com/imgs/products/tools/knives/fixed-blade-knives/benchmade-140sbk-adc-nimravus.jpg

The Ka-Bar is more blade for a third the price, but the Benchmade looks to be of better quality. Which would you go for?

Got my BK2 in, one of the beefiest and most practical fix blades I now own. Awesome. Spine is a quarter inch thick, hefty, huge but not too huge, and quality KA-BAR steel. Love it. I have yet to strip it, polish, add different scales and all that syuff people do to their BK2s, and probably wont. I like the simple approach.

Provided I can still type afterwards, yes!

So far I'm unscathed when it comes to flipping but I know the day will come when I get it good from one of my babies.

I'm not as addicted to the Balisongs as I am some other styles but I have a few.

Bardley Kimura II & III
Spyderco Rainbow Spyderfly
Spyderco Smallfly with Trainer

A Benchmade 53 is also on my shortlist

The only close call I've had involved my Jack Russell terrier. Was flipping my BM42 one day seated at the desk in the den and out of no where Jimmy jumps up and tried to grab the knife.

Evidently he had been sitting behind me and to the side, watching me flip it and figured it was a toy he wanted to play with too. Really startled me but luckily he only got hit by the safe side of the blade. Now I make sure he's not in the same room or just use one of my trainers.

Picked this model up off ebay last night

http://www.kershawguy.com/products-page/vintage-or-rare/wild-wild-turkey/

I'm a fan of ATS-34 steel and Kershaw in general. Only paid $68 so I saved a few bucks over ordering it from the link above though Kershaw guy was also the seller on ebay. Been wanting one of these but all the auctions always ended uo going for more than the knife costs on his website. Got lucky last night.

With a little over 3" of blade and titanium scales she should make a great little EDC. Kershaw only made this model for one year so if I like it I might try and win another one and keep it NIB for later as either a back up/safe queen.

Richard Simmons
01-28-2012, 11:06 AM
The little Kershaw was waiting for me when I got home last night. Supposed to be standard mail from Oregon so I was surprised and very happy it arrived so soon. Don't have a camera at the moment but it's exactly as pictured in the link above.

It came shaving sharp and locks up solid with centered blade. Don't know if it's the thumbstud location or what exactly but it's harder to open then most of my other liner locks. You have to push out more then up. May just need a little break in.

Something else that is different is that the blade has a definite detent at the halfway point when opening and closing. Like a slipjoint with half stops. Different and unexcepted but kind of cool.

The titanium on this really keeps the weight down. I like the swedge on the blade too. Neat touch. The clip is pretty decent though the knife is only set up for right hand, tip up carry.

Overall it's well worth what I paid for it. For a user the list price of $95 is probably top dollar but with only being made one year it might be worth double that in a few years. If I can score another one for around $70 I might, just to have a spare and or trade/ sale down the road.

I'll carry it for the next week or so along with one of my usual, larger folders and see how it works for me. It's light enough that if it holds up I might just add it to my permanent EDC lineup. I almost always carry a moderate to heavy duty 3.5"-4" folder and a second knife such as a Buck Stockman pattern slipjoint or similar knife in the 2" range. With the strong detent on this one I could see removing the clip and going with straight pocket carry with it.

If you like ATS-34 and are in the market for a very light, well made folder in this size range the Kershaw Wild Wild Turkey, while you can get one, may be worth a look.

Just ordered myself a Mule 12.

I'll be really interested in what you think of that Cru-Wear when it arrives. IIRC they had some kind of issue with it and this is a re-release but I haven't kept up with the Mule Teams lately. I bought 5 of the MT05 in 9cr18mo when they came out, ($19.95ea). I've only used one and loved the steel. I see them selling on the bay for over $50ea now so I may just keep the one and scale it and sell the rest. Was going to make a set of steak knifes with maple or elder burl scales but at those prices I might just flip the four that are NIB and use the money for something else.

The Mule Team concept, IMHO is a great way to get new steels in the hands of users at a pretty decent price.

Finally ordered a Buck/Ron Hood Hoodlum last week.

http://www.buckknives.com/index.cfm?event=product.detail&productID=3947

Been wanting one of these since they came out and even more so after Ron passed away unexpectedly last year. Wanted to use my BCCI discount but Buck never seemed to have them available on their website due to dealer demand. Checked last week and it was available so I hurried up and ordered one. Should be here in a few days.

With my BCCI discount it was under $100 delivered, well worth the club dues. Heck, just the savings on this knife alone based on the street price of $140-$150 + shipping would pay for more than 1/2 a life membership.

Don't know how much I'll actually use it but I found it an interesting collaboration piece and the fact that Ron is no longer with us means there won't be another one exactly like this.

Sweet! Have you got it yet?

Yeah, I like this knife a lot. Just the right size for a good working knife, with the added bonus that it is legal to carry it here in Texas (blade is shorter than the 5 1/2" max.).

I don't know what the deal is, but it seems that every US made knife I've bought in the last few years made out of carbon steel has had the factory edge profile look like it was ground by a drunk monkey. This knife was no exception. The edge angle was inconsistent on both sides throughout the length of the blade. After it was reprofiled by myself, it takes a really sharp edge that seems to hold up well. I just don't appreciate that a knife can come from the factory (and isn't advertised as factory seconds or anything) and have such a dicked up edge. It would have been better off coming un-sharpened IMO. This is the second of two Ontario Knife Co. blades that has come like that, and my Pro Tool Co. Camp Utility Knife was the same way.

Richard Simmons
04-09-2012, 10:01 AM
Well that sucks but glad you were able to get it to your liking. I've only had two factory knives so far that had terrible bevels from the factory. Both were Cold Steel products an American Lawman and a Rajah II. The II wasn't really terrible I guess but the AMLM took quite a bit of work on my diamond rods. One side was maybe 20 degrees and the other was closer to 40. Plus it varied from heel to tip. Finally got it straightened out but never did care for the way it fit my hand so gifted it to my son inlaw.

Last week or so have been pretty sweet with new knives. On Thursday I got my Buck/Ron Hood Hoodlum.

http://www.buckknives.com/index.cfm?event=product.detail&productID=3947

It was only "available" for a couple of days on the Buck website and I was lucky enough to get in my order before they ran out. Demand at the distributor level has been high since this model was introduced and it's only been on Buck's website twice for about 2-3 days or less both times over the last year.

With my BCCI membership it ran me just under $100 delivered. It's big, bad and very, very nice. Good feel and balance with a great edge from the factory. The sheath has a nice pouch on the front that I think I will use for a fire steel and maybe one of my older 112 Rangers. Very nice knife.

My 2nd knife for last week arrived on Saturday. This is a limited dealer exclusive Spyderco Para-Military 2 from Cutlery Shoppe with orange G-10 scales and CTS-XHP blade. This originally sold for $117 and each week the price increased until they sold out which only took 12 days. IIRC the total run was 800pcs.

http://www.cutleryshoppe.com/para-military2-c81gpor2-ffgcts-xhpblade-orangeg-10handle-cutleryshoppeexclusive.aspx

This is my 2nd or 3rd Spyderco in this steel and I like it a lot. I've got an older Para in CPM-D2 that is a dream slicer and super slick as well as a newer Para 2 design in carbon fiber and S90V steel. Even though the changes between the Para and Para 2 aren't extreme I like the P2 better.

Next to the Military the Para 2 is pretty much my favorite Spyderco. I've already seen one of these on Ebay with bids up to $290 and they are selling steadily on the forums in the $225-$250 range so for $117 + shipping I think I did well.

Will try to get some pics of both the P2 and the Hoodlum later this week. Anyway that's what I got in last week. Anyone else get a new blade lately?

Love my BM42 and though this one is stainless instead of titanium it should be pretty nice.

Almost forgot about this one as it's been about 3 months since I placed the preorder. Got the shipping confirmation email and it should be here tomorrow if all goes well. I'm pretty anxious to see how it compares to my BM42. I know it will be heavier (6.9oz compared to 4.1oz) since it's stainless not titanium. Just hoping the quality is the same. For me anyway I find the heavier Balisongs easier to flip.

Richard Simmons
04-26-2012, 12:30 PM
Received my Benchmade 62 Balisong and I'm pretty pleased. Beautiful fit and finish, shaving sharp and it flips darn nice. The handles are about 1/2" shorter than my BM42 which makes it not as comfortable to me any ways but it's a great addition to my balisong collection and one I can flip without worrying about devaluating it like my 42.

My hope is that BM brings out other versions with different blade profiles like they did with the 42. If you're looking for a quality balisong for less than the $300+ the 42 is bringing these days and a little more style than the Bradley Kimura series then this one might be worth considering.

BM 760 LFTi

http://www.knifeworks.com/benchmadelumtimonolockplainedgepre-order.aspx

The 275 is supposed to be a tank of a knife and the 760 is a Bob Lum design in M4 and titanium which I really like. Not sure I'm sold on the tanto but it's discontinued and getting harder to find and more expensive so figured I'd get one before it was too late.

Anyone else got a blade on order or just in?

Richard Simmons
08-02-2012, 07:16 AM
Not exactly "on order" but I did acquire a few Bucks this past week. Stopped by a local pawn shop on Saturday and scored a Buck 100th anniversary 110 with sheath as well as a 2 dot 110 with sheath. Didn't have a nice example of either of those in my collection. Also on the BCCI Youth Auction on the BCCI website I won a Buck 415 Kalinga (really sweet blade with 420HC blade and rubber scales which goes well with my S30v Kalinga with brass and rosewood scales) and a Buck 110 Nano.

The 110 Nano is one Buck made years ago when their plant was still in California. It's only sharpened on one side and a 1/4" of the edge is coated with a "nano" coating which is supposed to be super hard and extend the cutting edge for a long time. Buck made 100 of these for testing and according to them only about 40 made it into the public arena. That one won't arrive until Saturday. I'm anxious to get it in hand and check it out.

So far it's been a Buck Month for me. Anyone else get any new steel?

Amazon has one with a cocobola grip and brass trim. :smiley31:

The list of fixed blades I need/want is a mile long. Its starting to actually compete with my short-list of guns in terms of monetary value.

As a BCCi Life Member I order directly from the distributor so my price is a good bit lower than the retail prices listed. Still a good chunk of change going out the door but it's only money.

Just ordered a very special Buck 301. The BCCI is offering to members only a 301 Stockman with white ivory micarta scales and all blades will be made of BG-42 steel. They will have nickel silver bolster and come with leather pocket pouch. Limited to 100 plain and 100 with the BCCI logo. I've been wanting a BG-42 anything from Buck as it's been years since they used that steel and then only in limited or custom shoppe offerings. You steelheads know what BG-42 is. For the rest of you it's highly regarded for it's superior edge holding ability, toughness and corrosion resistance. I've I'm not mistaken it's not used that much for standard production due to the wear and tear it puts on the manufacturing equipment. Won't arrive until June but I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I get one before the limits are reached. WooHoo!

Congratulations. Have you ordered it yet, or do you have to wait them to arrive to the BCCI first? I look forward to seeing it with all the special edition features.

The 301 reminds me of something one of my grandfathers would carry. Not my favorite style, thats for sure.

Did you get the Buck 110 box set?

Having one of those on display would be beyond awesome.

I mailed my order for the 301 today. Don't know about the boxed set yet. Some of the models in it aren't supposed to be made until the 3rd and 4th quarter of this year. Unless they make them up for just the boxed sets at the beginning I wouldn't expect the boxed sets to ship until the end of the year after all four models have been produced. I'll find out for sure at the Shenandoah Knife Show in April. The BCCI President and other club officers will be there so I'm sure we'll all be talking about this and other things if I haven't heard before then.

Got my BCCI 301 on Tuesday. Very pleased as it came well fitted and quite sharp. Sorry for the lousy photos I'm having some focus issues with my Digicam.

I'm anxious to see how the BG-42 steel holds up. Knife came with a nice little black slip holster/sheath to keep it from getting scratched in your pocket. Classy touch I thought.

I do at that. I find the fact that it's still family owned pretty appealing as well as the knives themselves. It's a company with a culture I can associate with and support. Not a deal maker or breaker but I like it.

Not very good photos but got the Lochsa today. Really like this knife though the thumb studs are too close to the scale and cannot be used to open the blade. Even though it feels great, weighs a little less than a standard 110 and with the pocket clip it's going to work with me in the morning. I got #095 out of 500.

Interesting blade!

I like the concept, but it sounds like they need to redesign the thumb stud or the scales.

Agreed. No one noticed it when the photos first came out as Buck has thumb studs on other models that work just fine. Guess we just didn't think about it and apparently neither did Buck. I'm thinking if I can figure out how to do it I'd like to make a little bracket that fits over the spine of the blade with a return leg on each side that would go under the thumbs studs. There would be a notch on the top part that goes over the spine of the blade that you could use like the wave feature on an Emerson. You still couldn't use the thumb studs but a Buck 110 with a wave would be pretty cool and it would get you back the one handed opening that the thumb studs were meant to provide.
