You may have seen this already, but I wanted to point this out - there's a guy making a die set (I have one in 30 caliber) that screws into your existing press and allows you to make your own gas checks for your cast boolits.

Here's his web site: http://www.patmarlins.com/

If you're like me and would really like to be able to be totally "self sufficient" in handloading, then this is a tool for you.

ive seen before a set up where you could insert a chunk of lead into a spent 22lr case, and run it through a swage to make a jacketed bulet suitable for reloading into a 223.

iirc, it was in the neighborhood of $900, making it a non issue for me, but still, these things are out there.

i DO, otoh, have a die to make musket caps for bp rifles out of pieces of old soda cans and childs snap caps. they have worked well for me with bp, they are not reccomended for use with substitutes, as they need more spark to ignite, but in my very limited testing with them, they worked well with the pyrodex too.

Yeah - the .22LR cases were first used to make bullets during and imediately after WWII - when there were shortages. Corbin is the company that you're referring to.

And that's cool about the musket caps - what do you use for the primer compound? Strike anywhere match heads? Caps?

Also, I remember reading about guys taking old film negatives (which are made of cellulose with silver nitrate on them) and chopping them up to fine pieces and using this as handgun propellant.

People are quite clever when they have a real need... neccesity is the mother of invention.

trying google images to post a pic of the roll caps, i actually found the device, heres the link:

im not sure if theyre still made anymore, i got mine used from a member on another forum. he wanted $25 shipped, so i figured for that much, no big loss if it didnt work.

used about 60-80 wih bp in my inline with only 1 failure to ignite (which might have been my fault, idk if the cap was fully seated). tried about 5 with pyrodex without a problem as well. id like to get an old bp revolver to play with to use them on, but its always a back burner purchase, money always goes elsewhere.

There are a couple gas check makers on the market. Freechex is another (might have spelled that wrong). He sells on E-Gay.

I've also seen prints posted on a few sites, and have contemplated making my own, or at least getting the machine shop at work to put the prints into one of the CNC lathes and save me some time.

I dont use gas checks since I add a little tin to bring it up to 24-26 BNH ...@ 26BNH I have pushed my cast rounds up of 1800fps in fact i am sure you could go to 2200fps ....I was loading up 45-70 rounds and i am sure that I got up to close to a max load with out leading ...

Don't think of it as another hobby, it is merely an extension of the one you already enjoy ....... firearms and shooting. :martinismiley:
