KOZHIKODE: Shortage of weapons for practice is making it difficult for the Kozhikode District Rifle Association (http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/Kozhikode-District-Rifle-Association) to sustain the interest of youths in the shooting sport. The district had won the championship in the open sight category in the recently concluded 44th state shooting championship. At a time when 10 members of the association are preparing to participate in the Mavalankar shooting championship to be held in Ahmedabad from October 11 to 21, it does not have weapons required for the peep sight or aperture type category. At present training is being given in open sight categories and this will limit aspirants' dreams to take part in pre-national level competitions. The International Shooting Unions competitions fall in the peep sight category, sources said.

"Lack of weapons is a main issue and if the weapons are available there are five to eight highly talented members here who can win medals at the national level," said P K Sajeevan (http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/P-K-Sajeevan), district rifle association coach and former shooting coach of the Indian Navy. , adding that to grow in the sport should in peep sight category.

Fall out from the British occupation when the natives weren't allowed guns and the Indian government just kept that policy in place. After all it's harder to revolt if only the army has weapons.

They should have listened to Mahatma Gandhi, "Among the many misdeeds of the British rule in India, history will look upon the act depriving a whole nation of arms, as the blackest."
