Interesting.
I might have to check one of these out for my little go to rifle...

I think the AR in the top picture still isn't California compliant attached to the lower like it is. If I understand these setups correctly the butt has to be attached to the pistol grip extension as seen in the bottom picture.

I think they can't have a grip protruding below something or other. Can't remember what. The trigger guard maybe.

Found a pic from CalGuns.
Here's a Kali compliant AR.

I don't know if it's the pistol grip extending below the trigger guard or if it's a seperate PG. I don't claim to be an expert on California law, nor do I ever expect to have to be... :)

My reasoning is they wrote the law to allow for M1A's which have a pistol grip below the trigger guard but have the one peice stock, in that I think it has to have the butt attached to the PG extension.

It's the grip thingy.
I believe you can have a detachable mag if no grip.
But what do I know.

I wonder would a thumbhole stock that goes from the buffer tube down to a PG be compliant?

Eugene Stoner is turning over in his grave.

That second one looks like a paintball gun without the hopper.

(I'll bet that, even, Ivan would laugh at this one.)

Nope. Thumb holes stocks are specifically on the "ban list".

The only thing that's compliant in California is death.....

But even that is "Known to cause cancer"

I think I'd have to stick with a levergun.

That castrated AR has a lot more firepower.

What's the point if you can only have 10 round magazines? Unless you had AR mags prior to the limit law, I see no reason... :-/

There are 2 routes to building a california legal AR with an off list lower.

You can go featureless like the one in the pic, no bayo lug, no collapsable stock, no flash hider, no pistol grip, but you can use detachable mags.

Or you can have all of the evil features BUT the detachable mag, and you don't need to top load anymore you can use a mag lock which allows you to drop the mag with a tool. As long as you cant drop it with your finger you are legal. I use a screw driver but a bullet tip, or even a ball point pen works. Its also a reversable mod if you move out of state of TSHTF. only catch is you can only use 10 round mags in this configuration.

Nobody in California uses those fool grips. Not that I've seen, at least. ARs make up about 30% of the rifles that I see at ranges in SoCal. Everybody has regular pistol grips, high cap mags, and bayonet lugs just like in the free states. Law enforcement has never hassled me, *cough*... I mean, my friends who have ARs.

I'd thought by now the bolt had to be welded to the barrel extension....

1POM, while I'm thinking about it, did you neighbors ever get used to you firing in the back yard? I thought about that last night.

That's even worse than a pump-action AK.
