So I've been cobbling together an AK plinker on the cheap.

I've never dealt with a side mounted scope, but it seems to be a solid mount.

But ... I have to remove it and scope to clean the gun.

My question ... when I reinstall, will the sighting be off?

The side mounts reinstall with no zero loss.
(my experience)

My experience is that it will be off an inch or two, but very close.

I think it depends on what kind of clamp the mount uses and if it indexes on the rail well...

I would be OK with an inch or two ... hell that's better than me!

I do have to "tap" it into place. So it's a very tight fit.

The cheaper model like the leapers utg 5th gen is off by a couple of inches on my arsenal sgl-21. I wasn't real impressed with it and the extra rail on the side is rather annoying. The K-var is a lot more comfortable, fits well, and holds zero +/- 1moa with my bushnell trs-25 red dot. I don't think any mount will ever give you a "true" return to zero. I think the eotech has a 1 or 2 moa after detach and remounting. If your just using it for plinking, which 99% of people with red dots use it for, then I would say go with whatever fits your budget. It's not like your going to be fighting off zombies or anything.
