Olin may move Centerfire operation

Company discussing plan with union leaders

EAST ALTON - Winchester Division of Olin Corp. is considering moving its Centerfire ammunition manufacturing operation, a spokeswoman confirmed Thursday.

Other sources said the firm is talking about moving the operation, which represents about 1,000 jobs, to Oxford, Miss., the same location where the firm moved its Rimfire manufacturing operation in 2004.

An employee said a manager read a formal statement to workers on Thursday. The statement said that the move would be completed in the next three to five years.

Spokeswoman Val Peters said the company is in the midst of discussions with its union representatives with regard to the move. Company officials will continue to discuss the matter with them, she said.

Union officials could not be reached for comment.

East Alton Mayor Fred Bright said it would hurt his community, but his experience with the company shows that is not a major concern for management.

"Olin cares for nothing but Olin, itself," Bright said.

River Bend Growth Association Executive Director Monica Bristow said the loss of 1,000 jobs would hurt.

"Losing jobs of any kind is hard on a region. It impacts unemployment and a wide range of issues," she said.

Winchester moved its Rimfire operation to Oxford in 2004, along with about 150 jobs and a $3.5 million payroll.

The Rimfire operation makes primarily .22-caliber ammunition. Centerfire includes larger-caliber ammunition. Olin also makes shotgun shells and military ammunition at its Winchester plant in East Alton.

When the company moved its Rimfire operation to Mississippi, officials said the move was to reduce costs and improve efficiency.

The East Alton facility employed about 3,500 people in 2004. Peters declined to give a precise number of employees on Thursday.

If it was to reduce cost, why didn't the cost of ammo go down ?

It may well have been a choice of lowering cost or increasing price to the consumer. Move, lower the cost, and you won't have to go up on the price. They may have had data that showed if the went up on the price then sales would go way down so what do you do?

IL is probably going to rape them to pay for the schools pension fund they lost investing in junk bonds. One fucked-up city has sunk a whole state!

Vote with your feet folks.

Building homes in rural MS should be pretty cheap- Olin should just offer a prefab home and a moving truck to their employees if they move.

Olin Will Move Centerfire Ammo Production to Mississippi

November 9, 2010

(GunReports.com) -- Olin Corporation announced today that its Winchester Centerfire Operations and approximately 1,000 jobs will be relocated to Oxford, Mississippi.

The company's decision follows two failed ratification votes by members of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, in which employees twice rejected a union proposal that would have allowed Centerfire Operations to remain in East Alton.

If you had a choice would you bring union workers with you when you moved a company? I sure as hell wouldn't. The Union employees can deal with the shit they created.

Can someone please just pull the plug on unions? Watching them do it to themselves is brutal...

Pull the plug! And don't look back that is a good idea.

I love watching Union idiots implement self guided Darwinism. It's a beautiful thing to behold. We already knew that Union members weren't the brightest bulbs out there, but their continued choices to drive the companies that provide them jobs away just illustrates it further.

Not all union members are retarded. Yellow Roadway Corp employees took good size pay cuts and a complete stop to the company paying into their pensions. Still might go under, but the members are being realistic when they vote.
