View Full Version : Ariska Chicom Conversions

Anyone out there have any shooting time with those 7.62x39 conversions of ariskas that were being sold in the U.S. back in the 90's by "Navy Arms"? I've always wondered if they were any good and find myself wishing that I had taken the risk and bought one then.

I know there were conversions of Enfields (http://www.specialinterestarms.com/index.php?page=enfield_conversions) to 7.62x39 but never heard of the Arisaka conversion.

When Navy Arms advertised them the ad said they were WW2 capture weaons that the Chicoms later converted to 7.62x39. if my memorys of about 16 years ago is not faulty

I have several but have not fired any of them. Two are regular T38 carbines modified to 7.62x39 and one is a long rifle cut down with a stock and bayonet lug like a 98K mauser. Also have a two carbines and a long rifle chambered by the chinese to 8x57. Guess I should shoot one. Also have a 38 long rifle cut down and rechambered to 30-06 by the Siamese.

The Siamese did -06 conversions? I didn't know that...:gruebel:

Here are some pictures of the Siamese conversion of a T38 to shoot 30-06. Notice the rifle is shorter and a sheet metal front sight protector is rivited on. There is a cutout notch on top of the receiver for loading the longer 30-06 and another cut out on the side for cycling live ammo out using the bolt. The magazine box has been lenghtened also and a recoil cross bolt has been added. These are very seldom seen.

So what were these rifles like?Were they worth the money?Good workmanship on the conversion or looked like unskilled labor did the job?

I would say the workmanship on the rifles I have is equal to the Japanese production. I don't remember what I paid for the T38's in 7.62x39 but it was not much. The T38 carbine in 8x57 was given to me by a friend and he sold me the long rifle in 8x57 dirt cheap. For the T38 converted to 30-06 I paid $1K and felt like a bargain.

I have a T99 converted to 30-06 under the supervision of the US Army. A T38 converted to 30-06 by the Siamese. Have a T38 carbing reworked to look just like a US M`1 Carbine. and several more I can't recall right now.

Are the T99 and T38 strong enough to withstand the .30-06 pressures?
