So I would like to get into the ak game, and I would prefer a 7.62x39. It needs a chrome lined 14" barrel, with a permanent flashider/muzzle brake attached to make it 16". I would also like an ace folding stock, and tapco handguards. What is the best way to make this happen?

I live in Utah btw.

Buy a Draco and convert it into a rifle. Or custom build an AMD.

Welcome to Gunsnet! :welcome:

Let me ask... why do you specifically want a short barrel and crappy furniture? USUALLY people who want a Kalashnikov want it to look as authentic as possible.... meaning a 16 inch chrome lined barrel, a "slant brake" with a detent pin and wood furniture with the correct pistol grip (orange-red plastic for a Romanian, wood for a Chinese). Also the sling and bayonet should be the right ones for the model you have (i.e. Romanian, Bulgarian, Chinese, etc..).

I'm not saying that this is a must... certainly it is not. I'm just wondering why you want a "funky" configuration?

From a practical standpoint, plastic on an AK (especially up front where it gets really hot) will sag or melt the first time you fire off a few mags in quick succession.

Give that some thought.

Don't listen to Krupski. You've obviously done some homework and decided what you want - which is very subjective.

The ace stock and hanguards can be purchased and placed on any standard, stamped receiver AK, so that part's not an issue. The 14" barrel is tougher.

Maybe tell us a little about yourself in terms of capabilities - are you set-up with a shop? Do you have the tools needed to cut the barrel, recrown, press a front sight base on, thread the muzzle and drill a hole for a blind pin to mount the flash hider? If so, you probably wouldn't be asking how best to go about this...

So if you're not set up to do this then you will probably want to start with an AK of yoru choice (a nice WASR will do) and have a gunsmith do the barrel and front sight work that I mentioned.

Welcome to the board!!!

Most AK/AKM clones sold in the USA now have 16" barreles with removable & exchangable muzzle devices. I'd stick to it. I had an Ace folder on one, they are fairly close to Galil folders and are solid and lock up well. There are better grips than Tapco.

All in all, if on a budget, I would advise you go to a gun show and buy a Romanian WASR then add your extras.

If time and money are less of an object I'd advise looking over Atlantic Firearms, Vector, Arsenal and a few other sites and doing some research, then buy a higher end AK clone that meets your wants.

What's your budget?

Although, its $1249 :(

Then there's this one for $849... 16.5" barrel... why do you want a 14" barrel?

14" is a bastard length. Stock AK weapons come in the 16 1/4 inch range. The Dracos mentioned have either 10 or 12 inch barrels. The AMD65 Hungarian folding stock weapons have a 12" range barrel and they do put on extened muzzle brakes permanently attached to make them hit the 16" requirement.

Personally I don't get the 14" with a 2+ inch permanent hider on the end. The net effect is still 16" and you loose bullet speed with 2" less barrel length. Expect a 150 to 200 fps short fall in bullet speed.
