How big of a hog are you hunting?? hell, I have killed 300-400 lbs hogs with a .22 mag.

Do you shoot them at a distance? I hunt with dogs, so im usually right on top of the hog when I shoot it, there for no need (for me) to use a large cal. rifle. I mostly hog hunt with a .357 mag revolver.

No, moderate to close distance. Supprising that a 200 gr bullet at 1050fps makes some pretty good energy.

I'm a member of another forum and Bill Wilson of Wilson Combat as well as many others are killing hundreds of hogs with the 6.8 SPC and posting great results. You don't need huge amounts of horsepower to kill hogs I guess. We don't have wild hogs up here in my part of Oregon so I've never hunted them. I guess we have a few near the border with California. It looks like fun though!

Depends on how you're hunting. We trap and dispatch with a .22 LR regularly (a few dozen in the last year). Once, we had a 200+ lb boar show up unexpectedly. I shot it in the forehead with a 9mm Speer Gold Dot out of my CX4 Carbine. It dropped, acted like it was dying, then got back up and ran!!!! My wife yelled for me to shoot it again, but I arrogantly thought it was just gonna drop. I was wrong!! LOL!!! The round bounced off of that thick front of the skull!!! I think that all it did was knock the snot out of it. There was no blood trail whatsoever.

But, any Centerfire rifle cartridge will do the job on a hog's head, and definitely the heart.

Hell of a caliber, a friend has a Guide Gun in 45-70 with a Burris red dot on it he has taken several 300+ ferals with it. I don't have a favorite hog gun per se when I get the chance to go hunting I usually take a rifle I haven't hunted with in a while. Where I hunt some of the shots are 150+ yards so I use at least a .243

One of the FFL's around here swears by his .45-70.

Last one I took was with plain old .308. My shot placement was poor (low light, shitty scope, shooting at a silhouette in the distance) so I had to hit it again after a little tracking. The first shot still knocked it on its ass but good though. The poor thing didn't make it more than 100 yards before it ran out of steam. After examining the would channels I have every confidence that the round would penetrate the vitals and beyond if place in the right spot.

My buddy who was acting as guide has literally slain more than he can remember with 7mm magnum. He also likes the .338 winmag, and has no complaints whatsoever with that one.

Seems like any decently heavy full power rifle cartridge will do the trick.

One recommendation my friend made though was relatively hard bullets, so that they penetrate into the vitals before expanding. Those pigs have thick gristle, huge muscles, big ass bones, and a fairly small heart compared to the mass of tissues around it, so you've got to get past that stuff!

Thanks, yes, I'm the hog on the right :lool: The youngster on the left was doing duty as camp skinner - which was nice.

I smoked one of the hams - was good but a little dry. The shoulder would have been a better choice for that.

A lot of guys simply grind the whole thing up for sausage - not a bad idea really.

makes me wish I was there. Those Texas hogs. I believe its Texas thats #-1 for hog population, Florida is #-2 and California is #-3 (if you can believe that).

I see videos on you-tube, ect, where they have cages in Texas and trap them by the herd. Amazing!!

my favorite is 308 but Ive kilt a few with 762/39 sks/ak when I was younger I thought I had to have the newest wiz bang magnum now a good old 8mm mauser works fine ammo is cheap so are the guns.

I've killed LOTS of them in various sizes with the following calibers:

Big ass knife
.223
.25-06
.270
7mm-08
7mm Mag
30-06
300 Win Mag
338 Rem Ultra Mag
7.62 x 39 (hoping for a couple with 5.45 x 39)

All of them were more than adequate. As with anything else, shot placement is the key. A shot in the head with any centerfire rifle caliber and it's game over period...

Just returned from a hunt in Parker PA (The Pig Farm) 280 lbr on the move with a .458 Socom! (had to use it for something) the Hornady 225 gr FTX bullet went thru a foreleg just above the heart and made a mess of the lungs. bullet did not exit opposite side. Piggy on ran 15 yrds before dropping. May be too much gun but it was fun. The guide wants one now.

I like my wife's 7mm-08 for hog hunts. Plenty of take down power and in a 16 in barrel doesn't kick so bad.
