Between the "Butterball turkey tips" segments on the news today I caught this goodie. Thought it was worth passing along here:
.............................
New video has been released that shows the formation of a brinicle on the ocean floor. Essentially an underwater icicle, the brinicle, or "finger of death," freezes everything in its path.

Weird stuff going on down there

That's really weird and amazing all at the same time.

Pretty wicked.

Starfish are a species to marvel at as well.

Imagine if we could harness their regenerative ability to re-grow lost human limbs?

I wouldn't be surprised if scientists crack it within the next 50 years, either through stem-cell research or genetic engineering.

Very odd. We've heard of this "finger of death" before. :amen:

If it didn't go "Swamp Thing" that would be pretty cool.
I know they tried sea coral for bones a while ago but it wasn't strong enough besides some cranial repairs.

For now it's impressive that they can get what they did on film

Wow. That is one of the neatest things I've ever seen. It also reminds me of this:

(fast forward to 1:40 if you want)

This engine burns hydrogen and oxygen, so the exhaust is water. Amazingly, in the vacuum chamber, the water FREEZES into icicles around the rim of the nozzle. The exhaust flame next to it is over 5000 degrees F, yet the water freezes right next to it. Even at lower thrust levels, liquid water is spewing out of the nozzle right next to the flame which is hot enough to boil iron.

What I predict is that the cure for cancer will be a genetically engineered virus. A person with a tumor gets a biopsy, the DNA of the tumor is sequenced and a virus engineered to kill only those cells.

A week later the doctor injects a tiny syringe of clear liquid into the person's arm. They get a slight fever for a few days as the virus kills every cancer cell, then when they're all dead, the virus goes dormant due to having no host. Any recurring cancer would be instantly killed by the virus... a lifelong immunity to that type of cancer.

Of course, technology like that would also make the most lethal weapon known to man. A nutjob could engineer a virus that kills people with blond hair... or kills only white people... or any group with a genetically distinctive trait.

The technology is out there... all it needs is someone to find it. Just like nuclear fission. It was always possible... it just had to be discovered.

Here's a shot that give a little better idea of perspective.

That's from this article which tells a little more about the program the footage came from

http://www.bbc.co.uk/nature/15835017
Mr Miller set up the rig of timelapse equipment to capture the growing brinicle under the ice at Little Razorback Island, near Antarctica's Ross Archipelago.
.......

Doesn't seem to mention how thick the ice is

That's incredible! I had no idea it was actually being worked on. It was just a wild idea I had one day when I was talking with another guy about the benefits and dangers of genetic engineering...
