I am looking at a Norinco MAK 90 but not sure what would be a good deal.
Mag follower, spring, floor plate, muzzle break are Tapco.
Looks to be in good shape. It was pulled in customs in 87 by what I was told because
the numbers were replaced on the receiver. Also all matching numbers.
Any thoughts?

If you don't mind the AK-74 style stock set on the MAK-90 which is an ATF approved version of the AKM, that looks like a nice rifle.

By the serial number, it most likely was caught in port during the period when ATF was trying to figure out what George Bush the First was complaining was too "evil looking" to be imported. So evil looking that he believe just the way the AK/AKM/AK-74 looked would cause you to commit crimes. That is unless it had no more than 10 imported parts, then it could look "evil".

Bush1 was a jerk, and ATF was lost, hence the rifle still having the threaded muzzle, but originally that specific rifle had a muzzle nut tack welded to the front sight to keep people from installing that dreaded flash hider. It also had the bayo lug ground off but also lucky that they left the cleaning rod holder. Later they were deemed too evil and were also ground off.

The only alterations to the receiver were the lining out of the importer, the grinding off of the factory 66 in a triangle and the name "56S" which was also deemed too evil for us who have rights that shall not be infringed. The "MAK-90" is an obvious restamp as it doesn't match the font of the serial number. The serial number itself is original, and indicates the last of the 56S and first of the MAK-90. I know that by research as there are no true date stamps on most of the Chinese rifles. Some did have a date stamp, but most did not.

As for the price, these days MAK-90s are skyrocketing in price as people realize how nice they were, the fact that they were factory produced and are collectible because of all the bans. With the added stock set replacing the Bush-hole stock, and the muzzle device, along with the Tapco mag, it was legal to convert to angelic 922(r) specs and maintain the Chinese trigger which was arguably the best of any of the AK variants imported into the US during the early days when ATF did not use the import restrictions as a way to infringe on our second amendment rights.

$650 isn't really out of line in today's dollars, but it is pushing the limit. Granted in two years it might be a bargain at $700 since I remember paying $235 for my first one many years ago, never dreaming I would see them over $400!!!!

Good luck.

That's a line-out MAK-90, I would go $750 tops, and that's pushing it for a used gun.
