What's a good price to pay for a Polytech spiker, or double underfolder?

Prices of all Chinese AK variants have gone crazy lately. Between the scare of obama-messiah and all the new people finding out that the AK isn't such an evil weapon after all, be prepared to pay more than you dreamed you would pay for a Poly Tech.

The rarest of the AKM style is the double underfolder, and these days anything under $1500 is pretty good. A standard fixed stock with underfolding bayo is around $1000 if not a few dollars more.

Personally if I was in the market for one or both, if I found a double underfolder for around $1200, or a fixed stock with folding bayo for under $1000 I would have a hard time saying no.

And the Legends (milled) are even more ridiculous. I've seen "shooter" quality at gun shows with $1500 asking price.

For that kind of money you can get a Valmet!

And have... I've bought 4 Valmets in that price range. A M62 in 7.62x39 Fixed Tube Stock, M76 in .223 Folding Tube Stock, M78 Wood Stock in .308 and a M82 .223 Bullpup.

You got an M62 for around $1500? You did good!

It was $1,400. I think the guy picked it up from a drunk that inherited it for $400 or less. They both thought it was just a standard AK at the time.

I got a California Armory TIGR out of the same gun show for $2,000.

IIRC, I have $1,400 of less each in all the Valmets.

What is the most you would pay for a used Polytech Legend?

That is really hard to say. Personally I have a hard time dealing with the current prices on any Poly Technologies AK variants, but these days anything around $1200 seems reasonable for a fixed stock Legend in used but very good condition. A Legend underfolder around $1500.

I found a guy who lives close and is slowly selling his AK collection. He has an unfired Legend and is asking 2 grand. Using your expertise, is that reasonable. What would be a good offer?

I just wrote a really nice answer quoting your question, then hit the wrong button and lost everything. Sent a letter to the site people about fixing the issue of a reply button being a delete button.

To re-answer you, $2000 is too much in my opinion, but these days with all the people worried about more second amendment infringements, and the number of new people entering the sport, what seems too expensive today might be a bargain tomorrow.

When I got into the hobby, the Norinco 56S was selling for about $250 and nobody wanted those "commie weapons". Today they are pushing $1000. Not too long ago, the "who wants one" WASR-10 was $200, today you are lucky to find a new one for under $450!

Check Gunbroker and search their sold listing to see what the Legends really did sell for.

For $2000, the rifle must be perfect, in a good clean box, with bayonet, three Poly Tech mags, cleaning kit, oil bottle, gas port tool, owners manual, and sling. I would check Gunbroker sold rifles first, but after checking some of the listings, Legends are fetching some crazy dollars.

Prices on prebans are turning into one big rape-fest. $2000 for a Legend is ridiculous! I don't care if it was fired by Chairman Mao himself, these prices are getting out of control. I saw a Legend bid up to $2400 and still didn't meet the reserve price! What are these people thinking? Someone is going to pay that and then the next gun show they go to someone will be carrying one around for $500 bucks.

I've been logging on to Gunbroker 3 times a day for the past 6 months looking to somehow find a "deal" on a Legend. The used ones go for $1500-$2000 and the NIB unfired ones go for $2500-$3000. I've been to every guns show and shop within a 100 mile radius of Philadelphia and have yet to see any Chinese AK for sale more less a Polytech Legend.

The rifle does not have the box and comes with one mag (no steel follower).

Would an offer of $1700 be a low ball offer?

$1700 is much too high in my opinion, especially without box or any accessories.

The way to tell the Poly Tech issue mag is they are the only ones with three witness holes along the back for checking ammo amount. Other Chinese only have one hole at the 30 round mark. Most Poly Tech mags had chrome followers, but some of the early ones did have black metal, which is why you have to count holes.

As I mentioned earlier, $1200 for a fixed stock Legend is more reasonable in today's dollars, but then again I am one who cringes every time I read of someone spending $450 for a WASR-10 variant which seems to be the going rate for the Romanian politically correct per ATF "sporting rifle".

If you really, really, really want it, $1500 is a fair offer. I just saw one with the box and everything listed for $1800.

As of right now, a used Legend is going for $1,700 with 22 hours left in the auction.

New in the box is going for $2,200 with 3 days left in the auction.

Makes me want to open my safe, pull out my Legends and give them a great big hug and oiling!!! In fact, I did pull out a Legend underfolder and oiled the heck out of it again!!!

Amen to that! Makes me glad I got my Legend last year for $1300 and not even a scratch on it. I love shooting it too because I don't have to worry about ruining a safe queen.

How much would be a reasonable price for a Polytech Legend underfolder? I've been eyeing one on gunbroker for a couple weeks.

Have a Merry Christmas!

There's a guy at the gun shows around Atlanta that has a poly tech spike folder and he's asking 1200.00, but the wood is a little banged up. The metal looks good. Been thinking about it.

Wood for the Poly Tech fixed stock with underfolding bayo is still available new, but prices have been going up. Last time I bought a set from PolyTechParts.com I paid around $125 shipped for a complete set. Today just the handguards and pistol grip are over $100 and they no longer list the stock. Check various classifieds and Gunbroker for Poly Tech stock sets, but figure you might have to add another $200 to the price of that $1200 rifle.

Personally I feel $1200 is still too much for a fixed stock with underfolding bayo, and much too high if the wood is banged up.

I would offer him 900. Unless it came with mags, and everything else, it's just a used Poly.
