About the only thing that can bite you on a MAK-90, and that would only restrict your stock choices, is whether the rear of the receiver is unmolested (known as straight cut or standard receiver) or has been modified to make George Bush the First happy by angle cutting the rear of the receiver in an attempt to prevent you from installing that evil butt stock that would make you become an evil baby killer because the rifle itself is so evil... or so Bush1 thought. Ironwood Design makes a stock to fit any type of Norinco receiver.

Seriously, the cut of the rear of the receiver is one of only two things to watch for. The other is whether the muzzle is turned down from .550" to .500" to prevent you from threading it. Today that is not a problem either since the turned down muzzle can be threaded to 1/2x28 with many muzzle devices available.

The optimum find would still have the cleaning rod holder on the front sight and a factory threaded barrel, with a square cut to the rear of the receiver.

There is also a milled version which all have a double cut to the rear of the receiver similar to the Poly Tech Legend underfolder, but obviously without the folder holes, but with a round hole in the rear of the receiver again to prevent you from installing the evil standard butt stock. Again, Ironwood Design.

Prices for the stamped receiver MAK-90s are going for $500 and up. Milled receivers are selling for around $700 and up. Every now and then you can find a good buy at a gun store or pawn shop, or even a private sale where you have someone who just wants to get rid of an otherwise very good rifle.

Wow... where to start.

Almost every thing the Chinese shipped that got caught in customs when the ban went into effect got labled MAK90 and thumbhole stocks put on it. Some were underfolders, I seen a few milled Legends, I have a 20" barreled version and even the standard had diffent quality stocks put on them. Next, has it been converted to traditional stocks, has the muzzle device been restored or does it have a round muzzle nut tacked in place you can just remove like mine had. Next, condition worn or almost new, how much blueing is gone. Finally, extras like sling, additional mags, ammo, bayo (if lugs intact), is the cleaning kit there (minor, they are cheap), or whatever.

Price? From $300 for a rough, but functional one to $650 for a milled...

Add a Bulgarian front sight and gas block, some home made wood, and you have a milled MAK-90 restored to Type 3 looks.

If you get it, if you ever feel you will sell it, keep all the parts you take off, and do not modify anything that cannot be restored.

That does look like a very nice rifle. If I was in the market for one, and it came with maybe a couple more mags, I would make the seller a counter offer of $650 and see what happens.

Good luck!

$650 these days is a good buy on a milled MAK-90.

My 2 cents, if the rifle is in good condition, and I wouldn't worry about the condition of the butt stock, I personally would buy it. Mags can still be found fairly cheaply, but there are no more Chinese AK variants coming in to this country, which is driving the prices up as more people come to find out how nice they are.

If you are fairly good with a dremel, you can sometimes get some great deals on AK issue mags. I bought about a dozen for $40 because the follower wouldn't move. I took each mag apart, and tapped the followers loose, then with a dremel ground away the area that was causing the blockage. Rust had formed under the external stiffening plate causing the inside of the mag to blister. I ground the area down flat, then drowned it with a rust stopper, oiled the inside of the mag, cleaned the follower and for less than $4 per mag had a bunch of working magazines.

If you don't want some else's problems, new or near new AK mags can be found at virtually all our vendors, and AIM surplus every now and then has some great deals on Chinese mags.

If I was in the market for a second one I'd get it... They are getting hard to come by. A new milled can run up to nearly $2,000...

D*mn! Who do you know? Paid $500 for mine NIB last year. That is an awesome deal and great investment. Go shoot it, it's worth more used than what you paid.

Purchased Norinco MAK 90 (stamped) at gun auction last month (NIB). It has the pistol grip. No third hole or bayonet lug. Came with 2-30rd mags. This was part of an estate sale. Put about 200 rds thru it. Flawless. The reason I bought it was, many years ago, I bought a parts kit (minus lower receiver) for $99.00 just to have it, and someday run across A complete rifle that I could use it for. Finally paid off. I was reading somewhere that the 90 was a step up from the 47. Is that true? This is my first post. Hello everybody, looks like a great site.

Welcome to the Board!!!

A milled MAK90 is pertty much the same hardware as an AK47 minus the "evil" parts. Is your's stamped or milled?
