Boredom makes you do crazy things. So, I must be insane.....

I built a steel chassis around a Mosin 91/30. I plan to use it only on the bench at the range. There was no modifications to the Mosin except turning the bolt down.

It is fabricated from 1/2" square tubing, 1/2" round stock, butt plate from a PSL (?) stock, 1/8"x 1/2" stock, steel bipod, 2- AK 47 sling swivels, Weaver mount and quad rings, and a Tasco 3x9 scope. All steel except the SAW grip and the scope. I had all this stuff on hand so it was a cheap project. I am cleaning up the welds and prepping it for sand blasting and paint.

Well, I cleaned up the welds somewhat and painted the frame. Changed out the Tasco for a Bushnell 3-9x50.

Interesting. I'm currious to see where this goes.

Is it heavy?

I'm guessing the frame is 4-5 lbs, which is good for bench shooting.
Not so good for carrying.

Not the best scratch build, but it's functional and comfortable to shoot from a bench.

Oh dang!

That's pretty cool looking all assembled. Kinda modern. Not bad for a warhorse that looks pre WWII from the shape of the receiver.

Well, after considering barrel whip, I put my actual Bubb'ed Mosin in the chassis.
It's a 16.5" threaded barrel with a AMD-65 muzzle brake. I never thought a brake reduced recoil very much, but was I wrong. This one really tames it.

I also removed the chassis mounted scope mount and added my proven homemade mount.

Someone was selling 7.62x54 MG heavy barrels cheap... humm, turned down to fit... cryo'd...

With the right loads, it could give the race guns some shit...

I've looked into that barrel. All I've read about it is good.
I just don't have the means to remove and replace a barrel. If I did, I'd have one on it in a New York minute.

Hey Tex, good to see you around again.

Ugly, yes. Didn't go for pretty, just doing something different and it's turned out to be fun.

I think it looks great. Any chance of a close up of the scope setup/mounting system? Mosins pretty much shake most of them loose. So im looking for a better "mouse trap" :) I see yours is mounted to the rear sight & the receiver?

Yes, pinned to the rear sight base and 2 tapped holes on the receiver.
The mount is simple, but rock solid.

This pic shows one piece mount.

http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c80/Canis-latrans/muffinsandmosin004-1.jpg

But depending on the eye relief of you scope, two pieces may be necessary.

Thanks for taking the time. :) so its only tapped on top of the receiver? Nothing on the other side of the bolt ? I need something that sits father up since im taller & Mosin stocks are short. I think I would get a smack in the head with it being where it is on yours. How tall are you. Im 6'1 +

Are you saying higher up as in height of the scope, or set farther forward?

I'm 5-9.

slamfire51
01-24-2012, 12:47 AM
Set farther forward or longer stock I had to add 3" to my tiger The height of the scope looks fine :)

In that case, there is almost no limit to how far forward you can position the scope as long as you're able to get proper eye relief.

Man am I glad I saw your post. I just wish I had your talent:) Do you mind if I save a photo of this to show my gunsmith?

Thanks. If I had talent, I would have designed a super mount.

The 1/2" square 'tube' stock fits perfectly between the ears of the RSB and pinned. The tube lays parallel to the bore with maybe .010" side to side play. Even if it sits to one side or the other, the scope adjustments will correct it.
I'll take some better close-up pics tomorrow.

I think thats really sweet. Wish I had the tools & material to try something like that.
I need some pics of the groups your shooting @ 100 yds. Keep it going. Too bad the company that had the big heavy barrels sold out. Your rig could handle that I bet.

I sold the first chassis and made another. It has the same Mosin, but I'm using a red dot instead of a scope.

They are Czech UK-59 heavy machine gun barrels. Rethreaded to fit the Mosin.
There are many articles on this barrel swap. Google it and read the accuracy reports. All are pretty damn good.

I looked for the barrel a while back, and vendors are out of stock.
That sucks.

Thanks for the info. I was hoping there was a source for more PKM barrels. I wouldn't mind picking up another. A while basck there was a rumour that some one in the US was going to start making them.

I got bored again and made a few mods to the Mosin bubba'ed gun.

I did away with the metal butt stock and fitted an AK butt stock. I also made a rail running the full length of the barrel and stopped it half way on the receiver. This makes for a rock solid platform for scope mounting. I also took the old Mosin front sight and made it adjustable for elevation.

Added a rear sight behind the original rear sight base. This location allows me to use a scope without it being interfered by the r. sight. I added Weaver scope bases and Weaver double rings. I also added an AMD-65 front grip which will be used when shooting off hand. I am using the same bipod in pics above.

All these mods made one Hell of a difference over the old version . I now have a true Frankenstein BUBBA'ed Mosin.

Scope removed to use open sights.

Are you ever gonna shoot it and show us a target or is this going to be the hot rod that never leaves the driveway because it's always getting tinkered with to improve it? You do cool looking work but um, uh, er, ah, like you know, does that thing shoot?

Grump, I'm done with tinkering with it.
The metal stock was just too uncomfortable to shoot. I did shoot it off the back porch and didn't like the way it felt. I am going to do a rough 50 yd. sight-in as soon as the weather straightens out. I'll have to wait and hit the range to see what it will do @100 yds.

I know it will group pretty good. I shot it @200 yds in it's original wood stock and all 10 rds were inside a paper plate.
Hopefully it will do better now that it's not confined in a wooden coffin.

Just hold your horses, and I'll get to the range ASAP.
