Got a birthday next week (the big 50) and ordered this little beauty as a gift for myself.

Great Eastern Cutlery, Northfield Premium Trapper in blood red jigged bone and 1095 steel. My first Trapper pattern and my first GEC.

I'm really wanting one of these right now:

http://www.classicshaving.com/catalog/item/7149828/7303071.htm

Its a $240 straight razor, but then again, I could use it for the rest of my life. (or more likely, till I found something else to try.... which is why I won't spend my limited funds on one just yet.)

You'd be money ahead depending on how long you live. Last packet of Mach III blades I bought was around $30 and will last me six months (I usually shave every other day). Even at my rate that razor would pay for itself in four years.

That's what I'm hoping. There are a few other GEC models I'm considering as well like this Scout.

From what I've gathered they are somewhat new to the marketplace and had or have some affiliation with Queen Cutlery. I really like my Queen Country Cousin and will probably get some other Queen products but the factory edge is atrocious and reprofiling thier D2 is a pain even with my Lansky and Sharpmaker diamond sets. Once you get it right it's beautiful stuff but getting there can take some effort. That's kind of why I opted to go with GED and see how their 1095 is to work with.

Also waiting on some new models from Schatt & Morgan to come out. I like ATS 34 and S&M quality is supposed to be top notch.

Canal Street Cutlery is another slipjoint maker I'm looking at but IIRC they use a lot of 440C. Not that 440C is a bad steel I just don't know much about the heat treat Canal Street uses and how there stuff is to sharpen or how it holds up. They do have some nice offerings though. This Canal Street Stockman caught my eye.

No but I've seen them mentioned on various forums. They are something I intend to look into as are the Kissing Crane brand and the Northwoods knives. Moore Maker is also a brand that I'm looking at. Quite a few quality makers to choose from with lots of variety.

Once I build up some knowledge I'll probably start looking around, at least locally for some older models and see what I can turn up at area swap meets, pawn shops, etc.

The old Boker Tree Brand are cool.
Knives made by any of these old German knife makers are very collectable and valuable....copy and save the names. :)

Received my GEC trapper on Saturday and I'm very pleased. Fit and finish is stunning. Best quality slippy I own. She's serial #07 of 25 and is an exact match to the one in the photo I attached. Beautiful jigged bone scales and love the blood red color.

While not shaving sharp it didn't come with the butter knife edge that Queen ships their knives with. Spent a little time on it with my Sharpmaker whipping her into shape with a 30 degree inclusive bevel. Will finish her up with the UF sticks tonight and she'll spend the rest of the week and many weeks to come in my pocket.

I'll try and get some actual photos in the next day or so.

I've always wanted a Hen and Rooster pocket knife. I have no idea why, I also have no idea why I've never bought one.

Stopped by Northwest Hardware yesterday, this particular store is a Case Platimum Dealer and they had all knives marked at 20% off.

Picked up this Case Select Snakewood Trapper, (now discontinued)

And this Case Yellow Trapper

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y77/rsim20011/IMGP2740.jpg

With the 20% off and a $25 gift card I had the Select cost me $70 and change. The yellow Trapper was right at $20.

I like them both. Guess I'm developing a fondness for Trapper patterns.

Figured turning 50 was a big enough milestone to justify a few more purchases. Waiting for me at home are the following:

Queen Cutlery Large Stockman

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y77/rsim20011/QueenlargeStockman-1.jpg

I really like the Stockman pattern and this one just looked so period I had to get it. I've been hearing lately that Queen is actually putting a viable edge on their D2 so hopefully I won't have to reprofile this bad boy but I'm not holding my breath.

Buck Paradigm Pro

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y77/rsim20011/ParadigmPro.jpg
Been waiting for this one to become available on the Buck website so I could use my Buck Collector Club discount. It finally became available last week so for $80 delivered it was time to move on it. The bolster lock will be a new experience for me but if it's as good a knife as my Buck Vantage Pro was I'll be very pleased.

Buck Three Stone Sharpening Set

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y77/rsim20011/Buck3stonesharpener.gif

While I love my Spyderco Sharpmaker and Lansky Diamond Set I really wanted something for my larger knives and kitchen cutlery that I could just leave in a drawer in the pantry. With my BCCI discount I snagged this 3 stone set from Buck for $34 delivered.

I'm not a good freehand sharpener but this should help me improve in that regard. I'll post my impressions this weekend after I get done playing with my new birthday toys.

O.S.O.K.

Cool stuff. 50 huh? I'm almost there myself - next May.

Why is it that men are attracted to knives... and guns for that matter...

I guess their our tools of the trade going way back. Force multipliers.
