Has anyone been having trouble getting on the site? It has been hit or miss for me since before New Years, mostly miss.

Same here. Site times out when logging in from home, but I can get on at work just fine.

I\'m actually accessing this page through a proxy server right now. But if I enter \"gunsnet.net\" directly in the address bar it errors out, says \"The server at www.gunsnet.net is taking too long to respond.\"

More info: It looks like it might be a DNS issue.

Both my local DNS provider and Google DNS show the IP address for \"gunsnet.net\" to be: 71.42.211.58

But when I put that IP address in through a proxy server, it brings me to a mail server login page???

Steve, Thanks for the tip. I sent him a PM on Facebook but I don't know how often, if at all he checks there. I didn't even think about sending a PM from work until you mentioned it. It is off so I will see what magic he can conjure up!

Its not a DNS issue on our end or at Time Warner's end here in S.A... the page you are getting is correct because 71.42.211.58 is the correct IP to the server but not to the gunsnet forum. The page you got to was a redirect I created for paid (?) members to get a gunsnet email account. If you were to put the correct subdirectory and page to access after the IP, you would get to the forum but thats not something I'm giving out.

I have applied security changes but I dont think that would cause IP's to be blocked. I would have that listed in a log file that gets appended to when a ip is blocked.

first try this...
go to a command prompt as an administrator and type:

ipconfig /flushdns

try gunsnet.net...

If not.....

Get me the following info:
www.whatismyip.com - get me your IP address.

if you can get to a command prompt in Windows (I'm assuming thats what you're using) and type:
traceroute gunsnet.net
nslookup gunsnet.net

give me that output.

then do this:
notepad %SystemRoot%\system32\drivers\etc\Hosts

Look in there for anything that has a IP address and gunsnet.net in there.. if so, delete that entry.

Yeah, I just confirmed, the DNS here at work points to the same IP address. So that can't be the problem.

I'm going to try to login at home by typing in: http://www.gunsnet.net/forum.php and see if it lets me in with a full URL, instead of just the domain name, which is all I've been trying before.

If not, I'll use the proxy server and PM you my traceroute and IP info, and I'll check my HOSTS file as well.

Pretty much. I checked GN's DNS entries and we're fine.

It appears to be something wrong with the RoadRunner (rr.com) network in San Antonio, Texas. That's where my traceroute keeps hanging (IP address=24.28.133.51). Have you tried contacting them and letting them know multiple people aren't able to get through to the site?

Ok... I'll make it as clear as possible...

I cant see you from the server. Its not a problem at our ISP..could be between. Its nothing I can control.

Our cable modem was changed out, our configuration at the domain level was not changed, it still points to the same place. If there was a blocking issue, it would be at the server level which is not something I am doing. Our cable modem has nothing in it..it just passes traffic thru..no forwarding, nothing special.

Google for "free proxy server".. or use: http://www.hidemyass.com ...usage is self explanatory.

Ok, let me try my skills at English speaking again..

The purpose of a proxy server is to hide where you're coming from and also to be able to access blocked sites by going thru a "third party" server. When you use a proxy, it still has to go through Time Warner's network to finally get to GunsNet. What you're doing is basically circumventing whatever blocks your ISP and maybe inbetween GN and your/your ISP are. If there was a problem on GN which includes the SERVER CONFIGURATION, cable modem, DNS entries then there would be a widespread issue not just two people.

While its frustrating, there's nothing more I can do other than send you to a proxy server which is a link I've posted above.

recon
01-23-2012, 12:24 AM
Only Two people? I think it's more than that. It's still strange that after this site went down then came back up all the issues that SOME of us were having to get on this site. Since all the other sites that I visit I have had no problem getting on just is odd that this one is the only one with issues. I even did what alex told me to do to try and get here thru my provider. Nothing worked. But I was still able to get on my other sites with no issues. So it would seem the issue is still the servers or what ever it is will still be a problem here. The proxy sever works since that is the only way to get here. Go figure!

Alex, both you and steve mace have spent a lot of time with my problems...changed ISP and still cannot access from home. Plugged in a 3d puter and still no access. Let me say this.... brother Schuetzenman posted this in the admin forum.

"It's been a very wierd and frustraiting chain of events. I just got the lap top so today I went out and got a wireless router from Netgear and installed it. While at Fry's Electronics my wife brought up the subject of selective web sites not coming up to the sales guy. He said maybe I should uninstall Windows Explorer or upgrade to WE 9. So after getting the wireless router going I did just that, upgraded to WE9. Fixed it instantly.

File it in your memory banks should anything like this happen to your own PC's."

Not being able to get on from my home PC hit me just after Christmas. I really didn't figure out what was wrong until I bought a new lap top. I wnet on line with it from my home cable modem and could get on Gunsnet again.

What it came down to is I loaded Windows Explorer 9 and that fixed it. I suppose stripping off W.E. then reinstalling even 8 would also have done the trick. Something they sent out f'ed it all up.

Reinstall Windows Explorer or upgrade to W.E. 9 and you should be ok again.

Guys, use this proxy to access the site: http://www.fastproxynetwork.com/

It works a lot better than that http://freeproxyserver.net/ and doesn't try to escape all your quotation marks.

Plus its easy when following links away from the site, to be able to see the original URL up top so you can copy and paste it in the title bar to access those sites directly, like if you want to watch a linked YouTube video or something.
