South Dakota considers open carry shift

Thousands of Pennington County residents have permits to carry concealed handguns.

If Rep. Don Kopp gets his way, they won’t need a permit.

Kopp’s HB1015 would let any South Dakotan who can legally carry a gun conceal their handgun without having to get a state-issued permit.

SD Senate committee passes concealed carry bill

PIERRE, S.D. (WTW) — A Senate committee approved a bill Friday that would let people carry concealed weapons without getting a permit if they had a driver's license and met state standards for gun ownership.

Supporters said the requirements to get a driver's license are stringent enough and there's no need for residents to pay $10 for a concealed carry permit. Rep. Gene Abdallah, R-Sioux Falls, said people who carry guns illegally, such as felons, will do so regardless of whether a permit is required.
