View Full Version : Ran across a SAR2 yesterday

Dated 2000 with all polymer (I believe us stamped) furniture. Looked to be mint or else nicely refinished since I didn't even see a mark on the receiver from the safety. Tag price was $500. Yes, no, maybe?

P.S. The SAR 2 I bought new back in the day (later sold) had wood furniture. Was the SAR 2 sold at some point with a polymer stockset or has this one been modified?

Sounds like it has been refinished, but not many people were happy with the "mil-spec" finish on the SAR line so as long as the refinish is nice, I don't see it as a problem if you want something to play with.

All SARs shipped with wood furniture. Many were finished with what looked like brushed on lacquer which would clean up nicely. The polymer stock set is definately a replacement , if a nice one would cost about $100 or so, and again it comes down to would you be happy with it or want to return the SAR-2 back to wood.

Sounds like an ok rifle, and unfortunately these days $500 seems to be the going price.

Thanks for the reply. I don't really want to start stocking 5.45 x39 again so I'll probably pass. Just been quite a while since I ran across one and it kind of caught my eye.

The SAR-2 is a great shooter, but unfortunately if you are like me, you wind up replacing the front sight with one that hasn't been modified and installing the 22mm AK-74 style brake. That only makes it more expensive.

The sad thing is that ATF issued a letter explaining that since there were no flash hiders in 22mm threads, Century did not have to cut the threads off the front sights of the SAR-2 and SAR-3. I do have to give them credit because with all the other issues common to the SARs, Century did such a good job modifying the sight that most people never realize it once had the thread ring on the front.

I have to agree with you that if you don't have a stash of 5.45x39 and don't care to add another caliber to your collection, it isn't worth it.

Nut, I know this has been asked a million times, but I can't put a 90 degree block on my SAR-2, right? I can get the Romanian one with threads and then do that, but no luck on the 90 degree because is wasn't drilled that way, I think. If I'm crazy, feel free to tell me. :)

I have heard of a couple of people that welded the original gas port shut, then drilled a new one in the correct location for the 90 degree block. Personally I wouldn't risk it, but I believe it is possible.

Yep, not worth it to me. It functions perfect. I just love that look. Thanks bud!

That's why I did this to an SAR-3 Chief:

One of my favorite of my AK variants!

I would pass on a SAR-2 for 500 I think. For about that much or a little more I think you can get a more recently manufactured weapon with a muzzle break already installed. There certainly seem to be more 5.45 options than there were back in 2000.

Yep, that's exactly what I want.

I did my SAR 2 up to look like it just came from Romania with as many OEM parts as I could put on her to include the FSB/brake.

Is that Bakelite mag Romanian?

I'd guess East German.

I'd guess East German.

That would be correct. The only thing I don't have is a Romy Type 2 AKM bayonet. I tried to get the folks I knew who were going to Afghanistan and who were going to be working around the Romanians to horse trade for me to get one, but alas, it never happened.

Funny thing about that SAR-2. It's got a single digit SN. 1999 000X.
