As near as I can tell, it was probably made before 1850.... That would put it at 160+ years old, (unless I've got my facts wrong.)

Its the heaviest straight razor I've personally seen, with a full 8/8ths blade and only the slightest hollow to the blade... I'm going to have to make some new scales for it as well.

What does the writing say on it?

W GREAVES&SONS REAL DUTCHMAN RAZOR on the blade, and the Sheaf works logo on the shank.

There's some contradictory information about the manufacturer, some says it could have been made up to 1919, or as early as 1926 (when the Sheaf Works plant was completed.)

Hey Arnulf, got any recommendations as to how to get this blade cleaned up?

I would start with a 800 grid

I would start with a 800 grid

Would that be so coarse as to remove the lettering or just enough to clean the surface?

no its a polishing paper it should only remove the tarnish ...but I am not sure how hard the steel or how deep the lettering is so start low on the blade away from the lettering ...Actually you may even want to use 2000-2500 grid if 800 is too course ...

Its old you will never be able to make it look like new....and you might ruin it it you remove too much metal.....I would wet sand it with 400-600-800 and keep an eye on how much your removing.
