View Full Version : Remember those Romanian SKS we took for granted. Anyone still have theirs?

I had a 1959 all matching numbers Romy SKS that was probably the most accurate SKS I have ever owned. I remember when those things were going for 130 bucks a decade a ago and many didn't think much of them. I sanded mine down and put a nice Hershey chocolate finish on it. That was a great rifle, and shot really nice groups.

Putting pumpkins and melons at 100-150 yards was a breeze to pop with it. I miss that gun and honestly I like the plain jane Romy's better than these Yugo's. Nothing against the Yugos, I had one bad one and I have a non-fired near mint one that I gave to my dad. But the Romanian ones were built better than the Chinese ones IMO. Some of the Chinese ones had just pinned in barrels, and stamped everything. Where the Romy's if I am not mistaken had screwed in barrels that were pinned, milled trigger group frames, and receivers, and the rifling in them seemed to be pretty decent.

The Romanian was one I never did get an example of. When I wanted one they were all sold and I've never run across any since that were either priced well or in decent shape. I do still have a Russian, Norinco, Albanian and one of the first Yugo's that IO brought in with the honey blond stock.

Cabelas carries Romanians.

They have them marked up as Yugos. $275ish.

How do you know it's not actually a 59/66? I ask because they show a picture of a 59/66 and have it listed as a Yugo 59/66. They just have Romanian in the verbiage.

I've not seen Romanians at the retail level in years. Cabela's obviously has something wrong with the listing, just not sure what? We don't have a Cabela's near me so I can't check in person.

Cause I played with about 10 of them at the Wheeling store in WV. Usual romanian wood and metal quality. All of em were marked 59/66 on the tags.

typical romanian markings .

Understood. Wonder where they came up with those? Wheeling is the closest one to me and it's quite a ways. What would you rate them overall, G, G+?

Should this piece be lubed with light oil?
