I have followed the forum for a LONG time but I'm finally getting around to signing up.

I have a 2000 SAR1 that had the worst wood I ever saw on an AK. About 10 years ago I just went over the wood with truck bed liner and it worked out well but now it was time for a change.

I picked up for about $60 a stock set from Ironwood from their "wood pile". I took 100 grit sandpaper to it, followed up with fine sandpaper. Used minwax wood prep then a fery light coat of Red Mahagony stain just to get color matching. I didn't want a "red" stock and really like the dark brown walnut and got exactly what I was after.

I'm now following up with a few coats of tung oil then some stock wax. I'll post pics when I'm done...but for now these pics are of the stock before tung oil.

Welcome to the group !!! :welcome:

The SAR-1 is always fun to customize.

When they first came into the USA, the wood was lacquer covered and the parts looked like they were either dipped in the lacquer or it was applied very heavily with a brush. I have refinished many by using that old technique used on lacquer painted show cars and hot-rods.

Looking forward to seeing the finished pictures. Sounds like they are going to make that AKM look really good!

I tried refinishing the original wood when I first got it. The big problem was it was so mismatched that not one piece matched the others.

I have the stock with 3 coats of Tung on it right now. I think I'm going to leave it alone and put it together today and then apply Tom's Gunstock Wax over it.

I'll put up a few pics when done.
