View Full Version : I wonder why the Russians retired the Hind-Mi24?

I mean that thing was a monster gunship, troop carrier, ambulance, the whole nine yards. I know they have the Ka-50, and Hind-Mi28 today....but you think they would have tried to upgrade the flying crocodile. I mean that thing was truly the beast of the east.

Same reason we retired the Cobra series.

I thought the Marines still used that copter? With the Hind you just had a floating mass of doom! LOL Seems like it would still fit into the Russian scorched earth approach.

yes cobras still in service but gradually being replaced by ah-1s. army is replacing ah-1s so i imagine marines will get leftovers (as usual lol). the mi24 is sweetass but old, and the ruskies are rapidly modernizing their forces at an alarming rate in response to the chinese. it was probably more cost effective to replace the mi24s than update them as they were easy prey for the afghanies with their US supplied stingers and if you take a look at the degradation of the russian forces from that time period to now (stuff laying around unmaintained and collecting rust, much less being "upgraded") it would definitely make sense to replace than pull the crap from the scrapyard

The Cobra is the AH-1...it hasn't been in service with the Army for years but continues to serve the Marines. I think they are up to the Zulu model now.

AH-1Z Viper. Cool thing about this bird is that it carries Sidewinders...

UH-1Y Venom. Also a marine bird, a direct decendant of the old Bell UH-1 Iroquois .

Like the others said, the marines get the handme downs, the Cobras are on their way out except for special applications. It's a shame as any "old" design. I'd give my left nut for one just to sit in my yard Let alone fly.
probably the same reason I can buy a $56,000 truck for $5000.

Sweet. Have no hatred for either of the platforms. Would like one of each. Sadly we throw away lots of equipment that should be reserved for the militia(like us for example). I'm sure we would be happy to maintain it at minimal cost except for parts.

You know it seems like a few years ago I saw somewhere online that someone had Hind-24 airframes with the body components on them for like 13 K. Tell me that wouldn't be the coolest man cave in the neighborhood! LOL

Of course those I mentioned above were just shells. Here are some working ones...but they are out of the average joe price range.

Cool as the beast is, those massive exaust vents behind the propller shaft (you know, the ones that spit 12 foot flames when the engine turns over?) make the old bird allergic to heat seeking missiles. Aren't those 1970's technoogy?

That and I bet you th Russians sold all the working ones they had left back in the
1990's...

I think once they realized they could be taken out by a .22 RF, they decided to scrap them. ;)

I thought they had fixed the exhaust problem where it didn't give off as much heat.

She first came on the Scene in 1968. This is my favorite Photo. If anyone has it larger and in Color please post. The HIND A will always be my favorite, I loved that front Nose Glass like the B-29, and Hinkel HE-111. To me the HIND-A will always be the Coolest and Deadlest Verson of the Breed. http://www.gunsnet.net/photopost/data/500/Hind-A.jpg

POM, why have a slow ass chopper when you can have this sitting in your yard.
