Sorry for the crappy pics, it's what she sent me.

Could the rubbed off symbol be this? http://www.radix.net/~bbrown/pictures/japanese/mum.gif
I'm leaning toward Japanese Arisaka? Looks like it's demilled though with two holes above the chamber looks like?

Do the holes go INTO the chamber?

Yep, I'd guess Japanese also, but I'm not the expert...

I can't tell where the chamber starts, but every Arisaka I've seen has one or two holes in that area, so maybe it isn't demilled. Maybe for some other reason?

Apparently it's normal. They are gas vents and yes in the chamber! Never heard of it, but apparently that's what the japanese did. Cool. I might buy it from the estate.

Looks like a Japanese Type 99 rifle Arisaka and would have been originally chambered in 7.7×58mm Arisaka. Just my guess.

Based on the finger grooves in the forend and the narrow barrel band I'm going with a Type 38 rifle.

The mum was the Emporer's mark. This one was most likely turned over by the Japs afer the war - they ground all the mums off to minimize the disgrace to the Emporer. The guys with war prizes were told to do the same but most didn't ;)

I'd go for M38 too - 6.5 Jap.

What's the muzzle look like? Caliber-wise?

Looking again... that's definately a M38 Carbine. So the caliber is 6.5x50 Jap. - here's were you get your ammo: http://www.grafs.com/retail/catalog/category/categoryId/164?

They have some for $23/box - fmj 139 grain.

The original loading was a 156 grain bullet I think. Norma loads those - see that link.

This is a ballistic twin of the 6.5 Manlicher and 6.5 Carcano.
