Somebody out there has decided that the Department of Homeland Security needs a whole lot of ammunition. Recently it was announced that ATK was awarded a contract to provide up to 450 MILLION hollow point bullets to the Department of Homeland Security over the next five years. Is it just me, or does that sound incredibly excessive? What in the world is the DHS going to do with 450 million rounds? What possible event would ever require that much ammunition? If the United States was ever invaded, it would be the job of the U.S. military to defend the country, so that can’t be it. So what are all of those bullets for? Who does the Department of Homeland Security plan to be shooting at? According to the U.S. Census, there are only about 311 million people living in the entire country. So why does the Department of Homeland Security need 450 million rounds of ammunition? Either this is an incredible waste or there is something that the Department of Homeland Security is not telling us.

I could understand if the U.S. military was ordering ammunition in this quantity. When you fight wars you can go through ammunition very rapidly.

But the Department of Homeland Security is only supposed to be shooting at people very rarely.

It simply does not make sense that they would need so much ammunition.

This is a rhetorical question right? :losing-it:

That's only 22.5 million 20rd boxes. IMO, a drop in the bucket to what the shooting community usually purchases. And, it doesn't explain why foreign made ammo is in short supply.

There's a run on ammo, and stories like this one just add fuel to the fire.

I was in Acadamy today, and the prices are up significantly compared to the last time I bought.

How many agents are going to be using this ammo? Sounds like a whole lot of practicing to me, or maybe they are doomsday prepping?

Sounds like a lot but you consider that DHS is made up of the following agencies:

U.S. Coast Guard
Immigration and Customs Inforcement (ICE)
Customs and Border Protection which includes the Border Patrol
Transportation and Saftey Administration (TSA)
U.S. Secret Service
Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA)

AND they are not making 450,000,000rds. The contract is for one year with four option years and with a MAXIMUM production amount of 450 Million. No one just bought 450M of ammo.

Also take into account that the ammo purchased will most likely be for issue and storage/replacement of stores. I'm sure it's like the military, no matter what, when something reaches it's proscribed date of expiration it's used up or more likely, since we are talking Uncle Sam, destroyed.

Look up what your State police and corrections buy/use up per fiscal year.

Or what the NYPD goes through in one encounter

9,000,000 50 round boxes.... still a lot of ammo. And I thought this was a 10X increase over what they've ordered previously...?

Ammo's getting short because some guys are buying it by the pallet load!

That has got to be one of the prettiest pictures I've seen in a while.
Love it. But, also makes me feel sad that I only have one case due tomorrow.
Well, I do have 100 Corbons coming too, suppose that makes up a little.:squirrel:

I've been seeing ammo sales, myself. Been buying whenever I can afford it.

And somebody needs to take that ammo out from under where that A/C unit is going to drip condensation.

I'd guess that is what it looked like after UPS delivered to his residence.
