Edit: I have decided that 7.62x25 is out for me. I'm looking at the .458 SOCOM, similar to a 45/70 Gov't use standard AR mags and lowers.

I voted 6.8spc but ...But I am really stuck on the fact the .450BM is a much better round for any use IMHO but it drops like a rock past 100yds ...

Moe, if your intent is for up close type work I would recommend the 6.8 SPC. If you want something for long range then I would suggest the 6.5 Grendel. Just my $0.02.

I use Iron sights up to 500M.
I wouldn't hunt much with it.
I may end up getting two uppers to cover long and short ranges.

I voted other. I just built an 11.5" 7.62x39 upper. I was going to build the 6.8 until I saw how much it would cost to feed it. Both rounds perform similarly inside 200 yards.

I have a 6.5. It's a cool round, but I have not wrung it out yet. If you want a big bore, I would decide based on ammo cost and availability. The 6.8 does everything well and nothing great.

It's not on your list, but I got a Spikes tactical .22 upper, and with the cost of ammo, I have shot it more over the past year than all of my other guns combined. In fact, I never, NEVER go to a range or shooting trip without it.

It's super accurate, and ultra reliable (Federal ammo only, no Remington)

My son can't even pull an AR trigger with one finger, but he can drop a whole string of NRA rimfire silhouette targets at 25 yards, one shot each, every time, with iron sights.

I have almost that same set-up but I went with the 5.5" barrel. I agree, I've put more rounds through that by far than anything else I own. I like being able to run rifle drills without spending $100 on ammo.

Is it a 16" barrel with a 1 in 16 twist?

It's a 16 inch barrel with a 1-14. The can is fake and slips over the barrel, meaning the crown is just inside the can. I live in Michigan, so no cans or SBRs.

I had two Spikes dedicated uppers. Neither one ran worth squat. Before I ditched them they rarely made it through a mag without the customary FTE in the charging handle.
I bought a CMMG conversion and it runs great.
CMMG has dedicated .22 uppers for $350 now. I'll grab one of those.

I have been wanting a big bore upper for my collection. I was thinking of the .50 beowulf or the 450. but everyone seems to recommend the .458 socom due to the better ammo selections.


but i still can't decide. I really want one of those .410 uppers. I sold my POS judge and now I have nothing to shoot all these left over .410 shells with.:)

I like the 6.8 as a replacement to the 5.56.
It doesn't have to be the best at everything in fact, I like it because of it's 'middle of the road' standing.

If you want a rifle that will knock over an Elk at 300 yds then get a .308 lower. If you want to knock over little steel plates at 1000 yds get a .221 Fireball.
If you want a gun that will kill a Whitetail at 300 yds and knock over steel plates at 500 and kill humans in between and have ammo light enough to carry in quantity and have reasonable ammo prices along with easy to find components and have spare parts that are made in more than one place by more than one company.

Then I would recommend the 6.8 SPC.

I bought a 5.45x39 upper... S&W made a limited run of these and I got one off of gunbroker... 2 cases of ammo 1080 cans for $150 bucks a can.... need I say more?

It's a UTG, and I like it just fine. However, I bought it specifically for the .22. If I wanted one for a 5.56, I would likely get the LMT, because I do not know if the UTG sight is correctly calibrated for distance shooting.

Of the ones mentioned originally, I would go for the 6.5 Grendel because it can do both up close and far away work, reloading materials are about equal to 6.8spc right now, and Wolf offers 6.5 Grendal now....which is much cheaper than going to Alexander Arms. Speaking of which AA is now making a piston AR in 6.5 Grendel.

No. I don't have a .22 yet.
I was looking for something a bit larger. I notice there's a few uppers I'm gonna need.
